Now you know why Xena never takes the offer to be an Amazon.
At least not full time.

I mean Renee was there. Just not in shot.

Yeah love Victoria Pratt- she was also great in Mutant X and Cleopatra 2525.

I'd dispute the description of Gabrielle being a helpless village girl as right from the first episode we see her offering herself to save her fellow villagers from slavery and death and then getting some licks in too when the fighting begins. Also the desire to leave that place because she feels she has a destiny to be much more than she is there shows an inner strength right from the bat. She still has her vulnerabilities and some lessons to learn but I've never ever seen her truly helpless.

While it is a little uncanny seeing an actress who looks around the same age as Xena play someone who is supposed to be a physically weak (old?) hag, especially since Callisto was also skinny but was a great fighter, Claire Stansfield does a great job as Alti. Her powers are so so interesting! And they gave us this great opening to an arc with the vision of Xena and Gabrielle's deaths, which Xena must surely address and possibly prevent in some way.
Very glad Gabrielle is alive! It wouldn't have felt right if the season 3 finale was the end to her character's story, the very epitome of prioritising a big moment and big shock over character. Given how far Gabrielle has come from being an idealistic and helpless village girl and how conflicted she continues to be on Xena's warrior life, there is still so much to explore with her character. I'm very glad they didn't throw her away unnecessarily.

It was happy to see your joy in this episode at the revelation that Gabrielle is alive :-) I have to admit watching the last two reactions is the first time I've watched Sin Trade in many years as its not really a favourite of mine and my least favourite season opener. The absence of Renee is a big factor in that plus I'm not a massive fan of the Northern Amazons. However there's no denying that its very well acted and directed - some of the flying wire work in this episode particularly is very spectacular. Alti is definitely an aquired taste - Claire Stansfield plays her a little TOO well to the point she is genuinely unnerving and very uncomfortable to watch. I do miss Callisto! Xena's slaughter of the Amazon leaders in flashback is genuinely shocking too and its obvious the writers were now making some of her past crimes even more disturbing.

Victoria Pratt, as Cyan, is very appealing, not only for her performance, but for her physique, that of a former fitness competitor. To see actual muscle on an Amazon is nice. ... “Enemy of The Lamb,” a phrase used by Alti in flashback when invoking an entity curse the unborn Solon, is disturbing in its implications. ... Hey, Gabby! That’s a relief!

It was a very relieving moment, finding out that Gabby was alive.
