Hope was born evil because Dahak’s plan was to usher in the new age of darkness and his evil would come into the world through her. So technically, Gabrielle is not Hope’s mother, just her vessel. Her window into the world. But Gabrielle treated her as if she was her daughter from the moment she was born. So, in that way, yes she was. Was it possible Hope could’ve changed given Gabrielle and Xena got to raise her? Possibly…
But you have to remember that Xena was already on the path of redemption before she met Gabrielle because of Lao Ma and Hercules. It’s just Gabrielle was the one who made her STAY on it. Kept her on the straight and narrow every time she was triggered into relapsing back into her old ways as we see with ‘Ties That Bind’ and ‘The Price’. Could she have done that for Hope? Well it depends on just how evil Hope was. If she was born evil, then it’s most likely she could never understand good and therefore never become it. Gabrielle is the Light but she’s not a miracle worker.
There is that episode in Hercules where Xena was The Conquerer and Gabrielle led the resistance against her. She was the hero of the people and Xena crucified her. She couldn’t change her because she was too far gone. I think there is a point in all of us where it really is too late and we can’t return back to what we once were as innocent individuals. Everything changes. As the show evidently shows us with Gabrielle. But there is a difference when it comes to Hope. She was literally born to cause pain and chaos. She was evil from the very beginning. Xena wasn’t. Neither was Callisto. I think the right thing to do was to kill Hope. I don’t think they could have turned her good because there was just no reason for her to be good. She was created to be evil. She was always ‘Daddy’s little girl.’ as Hope put it. I mean you can disagree and that’s your right. But I personally believe it wouldn’t of happened. The Destroyer however. I reckon he could have despite his hideous form. He had the capability of empathy and love even though he was a monster. I believe that’s because he had Ares DNA. And Ares certainly isn’t evil but war is what he does. So yeah, I reckon with the love and care from Xena and Gabrielle he could have turned good. But not Hope.
I think Hope never had any lightness in her because she was only planted inside Gabrielle so her darkness could be released onto the world. There was no way she could be changed as much as Gabrielle wanted to try.
Hope is a Demi-God. Dahak’s daughter. Gabrielle was only her vessel.

Callisto - Did she deserve justice and peace?
Trying to understand the twisted and psychopathic mind of Callisto is quite the hobby for me while watching her scenes. It’s like some part of me wants to find justice for her behaviour. Some part of me wants Xena to feel punished for what she did to her. And I keep questioning myself on whether she was evil or not, which inspired me to write this post about what it was that brought her peace.
Do you ever think about the fact Callisto got more out of Gabrielle dying than Solan dying? Perhaps it’s because she knew how close of a relationship Xena and Gabrielle had, that she knew it would be much more devastating for Xena to lose Gabrielle than her own flesh and blood family? Or perhaps it was because of Callisto’s jealousy over Gabrielle’s pure and clean soul? Possibly jealous in a few ways. See, I feel like Callisto was angry at Gabrielle because she willingly gave up on what Callisto was cruelly ripped from. Gabrielle was everything Callisto wanted to be, and in her eyes, it was like she took all that for granted to be with Xena. To be with the person that has tormented her and turned her life upside down. For Gabrielle to give up on everything she lost out on; a family, blood innocence, a childhood, to be with the destroyer of her soul… That was just something she could never understand. And maybe all this combined is what made her feel satisfaction at the loss of Gabrielle’s life when she sacrificed herself to save Xena in ‘Sacrifice Part II’. Nevertheless, nothing gave her more fulfillment than her own death at the hands of her tormentor. The look on her face at the end of that scene, and the caress down Xena’s body made it quite clear to me that she was grateful to Xena for ending her life. At least until she realized consciousness continued. Then she hated her again. It never ended.
It really puts things into perspective when you think about it. Hurt people hurt people. The way we see, hear, feel or think of a person has nothing to do with them no matter what they’ve done to us. It’s us. It’s ourselves that has the problem. Our own torment twists our perception of everything around us. There was no justice for Callisto because she brought it all onto herself, and that’s why she could never find peace. She was her own worst enemy. Xena had to give up her own soul to save hers. She felt she owed it to Callisto. But when you really think about it, Callisto was just causing herself all the torment. She could have just let it all go when Xena killed her, but she didn’t. She still wanted her revenge. Xena never destroyed her. She destroyed herself! I suppose that answers my question on whether she deserved justice or not. She didn’t. But she did deserve peace. It may have been her fault her torment continued, but it wasn’t her fault it started in the first place. Hurt people hurt people. And she wasn’t just hurt. She was utterly destroyed because of the Warrior Princess.
All she had to do was let go and her torment would have ended.

Liam, I hope some of Xena's last words to Gabrielle softens the blow a little. As well as that Gabrielle went out on her own terms and saving the world from an apocalypse brought about by Hope and Ares' children.
"Gabrielle, I want you to know you were the best thing that ever happened to me. You gave my life meaning and joy. You will be a part of me forever."

That's a great scene and a real shame they left out of the aired version. This episode could easily have trimmed down much of the beginning recap, the Joxer/Hope scene or some of those shots of Xena fighting and Callisto torching people at the village to make room for it.

This episode (and the two-parter as a whole) remains a great example of how good a season finale can be. It’s shattering. ... I am not convinced Ares wasn’t angling for a way to kill Dahak the whole time. That’s just a theory. ... The first time I saw this, I really thought Xena had driven Joxer away, hurting his feelings for his own good. Then, of course, it’s all a part of the plan. ... “Off the deep end.” Well, I do laugh at it, but I can’t blame you for not seeing the humor.

Oh, and as a reminder, as obviously you wouldn't have been in much of a state to focus on it after the dramatic end of this ep, just a request for you to react to this deleted scene from this episode here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzfpCHLQrs8 Maybe you could do so in the intro to your reaction of Season 4 Episode 1. Now I know your liking for a certain character, I think you will be really intrigued by it.

Yep those final moments of this episode do hit hard- like yourself Gabrielle and Callisto are my two favourite characters so I felt similarly on first viewing. But as hard as it to watch the events of the last five minutes, by god are they powerfully acted, shot and scored. It's funny that you should mention The Gift in your thoughts as I definitely think the Buffy team drew some inspiration for that episode from this as there's that similar mood of impending apocalypse and sacrifice with a massive emotional gut punch. I think it's safe to say now, Liam, that you've come to appreciate just how good this show can be and your reaction sure sold that feeling. You've learned especially this season its a series that is not afraid to do the unexpected- at least you won't have to wait a whole year like we did originally to see what happens next.....

I maintain that the show deciding to let Gabrielle live through the season 1 finale was among the best creative decisions it made for the series. Season 3 was in fact more about Gabrielle's development than Xena; she no doubt added so much heart and layers to the show in how her central world view clashed with Xena's. Xena will definitely struggle to find her footing again over the next few episodes or even season. Gabrielle was not just her moral compass but also her soulmate.
