Xena: Warrior Princess 5x05 “Them Bones, Them Bones” Reaction

“But I can tell you this, Xena… you’re the only constant in my life, and unless you know something I don’t, I’m not going anywhere. So I’m going to say the most selfish thing I’ve ever said to you: that baby’s my baby too, and I deserve a chance to fight for it as much as you.” - Gabrielle, Them Bones, Them Bones (Original script dialogue)

Some of Steven Sears' scripts for Season 5 were rewritten because of his committments to the Sheena series. His plans for Amarice were very different. She was a genuine Amazon as far he was concerned. He explains it on one of the Anchor Bay Season 4 Featurettes. Making her a "fake" Amazon was a terrible change.

I don't understand how Amarice can not be a "real" Amazon. Is she just a random woman who Ephiny found one day, agreed to let live and travel with her and Gabrielle's tribe, but never inducted officially as an Amazon? I am a big fan of Steven L Sears' writing. Remember Nothing, The Price, and A Good Day are among my favourite episodes of the series. And 90% of his other less "big" episodes also have a special heart and flair from his tight writing. But his episodes from season 5, including this one, are very average and muddled. I wonder if that is why he chose to be credited under a pen name (Buddy Williers) for this episode instead; because other production considerations meant he didn't get to fully execute the story he had in mind. Anyone have any backstory on this? The first half was weak. I do like that Gabrielle got yet another heroic and learning moment in her learning the ways of the shamaness. But I wish Alti didn't defeat her so easily. Then again, Alti defeated Xena just as easily after that too, so she might just be that powerful in that realm. The mini twist with Yakut accidentally being responsible for Alti being unleashed felt half baked. It didn't have any impact at all in the grand scheme. I wish they had just made her a full villain and Alti's agent in the real world if that's the path they wanted to take. The second half was stronger with the Amarice character moments. Ironically, despite the skeleton fight being cheesy and having subpar CGI, I liked it and thought it was something new we hadn't seen before on the show.
