Yeah, really not a fan of Joxer forcing his affections on Gabrielle. As Gabrielle said. He told her that he loved her but that he didn’t expect anything from her. But he obviously does if he is trying to make her notice him and trying to show her how good he can be for her. Like no, my guy. Just take the hint. She’s not interested and she has someone else anyway. You know this. Just stop. I guess I can understand though with 2 of his other friends falling in love right in front of his eyes as well. He just feels lonely. But there is someone for him that actually wants a relationship with him. He has Meg.

She couldn’t make it happen so how else could it happen? “Ares! Maybe he did a God thing while I’m-” “NO!” “Okay, fine” While you were what? What were you doing Gabrielle? Those were some pretty suspicious hand gestures 😏 No, in all serious though. They’re playing the subtext of Xena having another lover in the scenario and Gabrielle thinking her girlfriend cheated on her. So yeah, she’s a little put out. Understandably.

2023-11-24 16:54:43 +0000 UTCWhen Xena finds out she’s pregnant in the episode ‘Animal Attraction’ and then decides to tell everyone, it shuts the entire room up. It definitely shuts Gabrielle up (and we all know that’s hard to do as it is). But the best part of the episode for me is Gabrielle questioning Xena on who the father is and her very first assumption is Ares. Of course she would go straight to Ares without a second thought… Imagine what she must have been thinking about all the “various ways” he could of impregnated her. And Xena’s like “No no, don’t go there” I know a lot of people didn’t think much of Season 5 but I honestly thought it was one of the best story arcs in the entire show because not only did it change Xena and make her more feminine and vulnerable. But it changed Gabrielle too. She became the overly-protective masculine half of the duo always willing to fight to protect and defend Xena and her baby. Gone was the wannabe pacifist from Season 4 who chose to do nothing because she thought it was her “Way”. And I love the back and forth eye moving from Xena to Gabrielle with Amarice. I can hear exactly what she’s thinking in her head. “This is better drama than living with the Amazons”.

2023-11-24 16:26:43 +0000 UTCThat one reaction from Amarice in ‘Animal Attraction’ just after Xena reveals that she’s pregnant. She looks from Xena to Gabrielle twice over with not so much a shocked expression on her face but rather one of complete incredulousness. And I can’t quite decide if it’s because she’s wondering what Gabrielle might think and feel that someone else got Xena pregnant OR (because she knows that Xena and Gabrielle are together) that she’s trying to figure out how it’s even practical Gabrielle could get Xena pregnant. I mean it’s at this point in the show where everyone that knows, hangs around or are even involved with Xena and Gabrielle know the truth about them. So because of the ambiguity of the writing, it’s hard to deduce whether the way Amarice reacts to the information is because she knows about them and is processing the practicality of Gabrielle’s involvement or because she knows about them and is concerned about Gabrielle processing the information if it was somebody else. Because you see… anything can happen in this wacky show and therefore women getting other women pregnant is entirely possible. And therefore I think it’s likely that Amarice’s reaction could be either way or even both. Her reaction and expression to me reads like (to borrow a quote from ‘BTVS’): “How? What? How?”. And just the thought of that makes me giggle. It’s like she’s trying to process in her head whether it’s Gabrielle’s baby or not, and if so - what possible hijinks the two of them could have been up to that could even make pregnancy happen. It’s hilarious! This is what subtext and ambiguity in TV show writing does. It’s creates and provokes in the watcher many different interpretations because the writing is so understated. You’re not given a “Yes” or “No” answer outright. So you have to come up with it yourself. This is what I absolutely love about Xena. The ambiguity and subtext in the writing of the narrative. It’s fucking brilliant the way they do it. The way they get passed the censorship of same-sex romantic/sexual implications. It’s ingeniousness.

2022-08-22 16:07:45 +0000 UTCAlison Bruce (Talia) was previously in season 1 as Amazon Queen Melosa. I really enjoy her characters. She brings such duality of toughness and softness to the roles she takes. Apparently, the name of Gabrielle's horse is "Amber" despite it being a male horse.
