Xena: Warrior Princess 3x06 "The Debt Pt.1" Reaction

Never forget that Lao Tzu’s (the author of the ‘Tao Te Ching’ and the founding father of Taoism) wife was in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. Lao Ma was a woman, and she was all that women weren’t supposed to be in Ancient China. Powerful, wise, influential, and of great spiritual knowledge and ability. She ruled the Lao dynasty and wrote the book ‘The Art of War’, all while caring for her incapacitated husband. She allowed him to take all the credit for all the work she’d done to keep his kingdom in prosperity. She also taught Xena psychic abilities. The first of which was telekinesis, which Xena demonstrates in ‘The Debt II’. Through the pages of Lao Ma’s book, Xena also mastered the psychic abilities of clairsentience, psychokinesis (PK), and transfiguration, whereby she used all of which to save Gabrielle, that time she was in danger when her and Lin Chi were about to be blown up with explosives, throw balls of energy at her enemies, create an energetic shield around herself and her loved ones to protect them, and turn an entire army to stone… all with using her mind. To answer a question frequently brought up in the fandom: how could the embodiment of peace, love and humility write a book about war? I’ve actually read the book. The message was taken out of context. Yes, the book is called ‘The Art of War’, and it is about military strategy… But it was never to do with war at all. It was love. The entire opposite to what the book is about was twisted throughout the ages into being something it is not, because love and war are two sides of the same spectrum of reality, therefore, they go together and they work together as one. This is why love can both start a war and end it. It’s the same thing, just at different extremes. This is fundamental to the philosophy of ‘Yin-yang’ and the Tao.  In real life, it was actually Sun Tzu that wrote ‘The Art of War’, not Lao Tzu, so it was interesting that Lao Ma wrote it, considering she is the wife of Lao Tzu and not Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, not unlike the Mongol general in the show, Genghis Khan. But the producers always liked to take liberties with famous historic legends and people, and twist them around to suit the culture of the show, as well as Xena’s legacy. They wanted to make a woman the all-knowing and all-powerful person. I definetly don’t object to that. I just thought it was an interesting choice.  Lao Ma was played by the talented Jacqueline Kim. It’s a pity she couldn’t reprise her role in ‘Purity’/‘Back In The Bottle’, but for the brief appearance she gave us, she did really well, and it made the show all the better for me. Lao Ma is not appreciated anywhere near enough for her significance to and influence on the main character.
