Ted Raimi in the DVD commentary reel for ‘Been There, Done That’ on what he thinks happens when Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer are camping together at night:
“Joxer’s always curiously ignorant about their sexual relationship. ‘Cause Joxer, Gabrielle and Xena have camped together for like 5 or 6 years. And I’m certain he’s never seen them without their clothes once. I’m sure they tell him ‘Joxer, go to the hill, 5 miles, take a hike, and then come back’. So throughout the show he’s kind of blissfully, curiously, stupidly unaware of what’s happening with their relationship. That line, ‘Is that a hickey?’ Lucy Lawless added that line in. It was a very funny line.”
Most of the cast and crew think of Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship the way the fans do. Starting out as best friends with benefits and then becoming a committed couple. And I swear we have Lucy Lawless to thank for most of the subtextual moments between them.

Xena and Gabrielle wake up in a barn when Joxer walks in with goose eggs for their breakfast. At first everything seems to be normal. Just another day in their travels. However, when Joxer gets killed in the town civil war and then appears the next day, Xena realizes the day is repeating itself in a funny and clever spoof of Bill Murray’s classic, ‘Groundhog Day’. Thus, hilarity ensues, and everyone except Xena doesn’t realize that anything out of the ordinary is happening at all.
Lots of camp, a lovely hurt/comfort moment between Xena and Gabrielle, and subtext about a hickey. It’s not only one of the funniest episodes of the whole show, but also one of the cleverest, as it throws you for a loop… literally. A time-loop. It’s definetly one of my favourite comedy episodes.

What I really love about this episode, besides the plot itself I mean, is the references to Sinbad. For instance the dude that wishes for tomorrow to never come says he expected Hercules or as least Sinbad. But also the reference of the name "Casgar", which is also the name of an island in the 70's movie, 'Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger' . And it's just bloody brilliant how they throw references like that in the show. Most fans are usually nonthewiser about them and will only pick them up after many watches of the episodes. That's why Xena is timeless.

It appears Gabrielle developed an extreme affinity/fetish for Xena’s neck since ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ if the hickey mentioned in this episode is any indication.

Hahahaha at 18:30 you missed the subtle hints of the Xena Gabrielle ship, Joxer says “is that a hicky?” And Gabs just makes this side face hahaha 😏

I just loved the unexpected cut. I never expected them to try the rooster and for it to be a throwaway gag but here we are 😂😂

I hope to one day be as purely, intensely happy as Liam was at that rooster clearing its throat. Y'know... just normal Xena things. XD

A fan favorite episode and I agree with its popularity. I also note that along with the Herc reference (which I always like) we get confirmation that Sinbad exists in this universe. 😆

very excited, I absolutely love this episode, maybe my favorite comedic episode of the series (though there's some more excellent ones coming)
