Notice how they keep the pronouns gender neutral when Gabrielle’s talking about how she can’t marry the king because she’s in love and she can’t be with anyone else. She says “person” and “them”. It could be interpreted as Perdicus. But it could also be interpreted as Xena. The writers were aware of this and therefore kept it neutral because they wanted as many viewers to relate to and resonate with the show as possible. Including - especially - gay or queer people and the X&G shippers.

2021-11-27 11:52:31 +0000 UTCI actually agree that this feels a little like an early Season 1 episode where Gabrielle would be relegated to the sidelines more though i do find the scenes between her and Vidalus a lot of fun (and those dresses!) Jeremy Callaghan is also engaging as Palaemon and goes on a nice arc in the episode. I think Xena actually becomes more "Lucy" as the camera starts to fade out at the end!

XD You're right too, Xena has already "died" twice (The Greater Good and Destiny), so she's fitting right in with Gabrielle's other love interests. I also do agree that this seems more like a season 1 Gabrielle story. While she still isn't an elite fighter now, I do think she is generally at a point where she has outgrown being taken hostage by two or three random thugs. This also did feel like an origin story for Palaemon much like how Joxer started off being a failed villain in Callisto then made a similar turn for the good. It would be interesting to see what he makes of himself after having a change of heart at the end of this episode.
