A good episode for recurring character Meleager the Mighty (he ought to contact Joxer for copyright royalties on using his name), lots of twists and turns that make you question a lot about what’s going on.
I like that Xena called out Gabrielle’s naivety with believing everything she hears from what Meleager tells her. Similarly, Gabrielle was holding Xena up to such high expectations as a hero, and it seemed that she didn’t even realize it. This was also a part of her evolution into becoming a warrior. She had to learn to not believe the hype and to not take people at face value. When Gabrielle learned these lessons, she had a better judge of character and was able to see through manipulation and lies.

This won't be the last time the show uses their own editing and cinematography to pull one over on us, the audience. :D
I like Meleager a lot. He links very nicely to a recurring theme of the show: on how heroes, villains and everyone in between measure up to their legacies. Also love his friendship with Gabrielle and the "father-in-law" like tentative trust he has with Xena. They aren't quite aligned or sure of each others intentions, but they trust each other to have Gabrielle's best interest at heart.

This episode is quite good; I actually like Judge Arbus at first and kinda wish he didn’t turn out to be such a low person. Meleager’s a good character and Tim Thomerson’s little touches make him so real. The fake out ending is great, especially as the show already has you expecting a ruse in the identity of the executioner, then leaves you to puzzle out what the heck is going on. ... I still enjoy the executioner deciding which one of his hooded robes he’s going to wear. Actually, I like the executioner as a whole. (He also makes me think of Joxer’s line from the previous episode about notifying the executioner’s guild.

It's really nice to see Meleager return in this episode and his bond with Gabrielle produces some very touching moments. I also like how Gabrielle is prepared to stand up to Xena in this episode to protect him. Definitely an interesting scene when the tension of them both doing what they feel is right comes to odds. And yes, that fake out really does work for a few minutes with the supposed hanging . I don't know if you're still checking the end of episode disclaimers but this one contains one of my favourites - "By popular demand "The Executioner" will bring back his comfortable lightweight cotton-flax blend robe in a variety of spring colors."
