I just love that you’re appreciating and enjoying the comedy and camp sides of Xena. For newer viewers this is something that’s turned them off. You really are the right person to react to this show.

2021-11-05 18:12:53 +0000 UTCThe Ballad of Joxer the Mighty is a great piece of music, honestly. And this episode is an excellent comedy. It’s one of many examples of how the shows in this universe can do excellent stuff when faced with serious challenges that many other (good) shows may not be able to overcome. Also, it’s always cool to have characters introduced elsewhere popping up, in this case Aphrodite (yow) and her boy.

2021-11-05 05:12:13 +0000 UTCThe reason this was another Xena-lite episode is that it was another filmed during the period when Lucy was recovering from her pelvic injury and just placed later in the run. It does give Ted Raimi a nice chance to shine and is an episode inspired by the 1955 musical comedy The Court Jester which features a similar scenario of a man being triggered into being a swashbuckler by a particular action. It also features Aphrodite and Cupid's introduction to the Xena series (they had previously been introduced on Hercules) and gives good ol' Karl Urban yet another character to play in the Herc-Xenaverse. Ted Raimi also wrote the iconic Joxer The Mighty song himself too. Have to admit really enjoy Gabby's temporarily bamboozled reaction to being kissed by Hero Joxer and the aftermath "That was scary!"
