‘A Day In The Life’ is a comedy episode that centers around Xena and Gabrielle’s average day of fighting for the innocent. Now while this episode is highly regarded in the fanbase because of the hilarious things Xena and Gabrielle do to each other to affectionately aggravate one another that drives them both crazy like a squabbling old married couple, it’s also got a very inspiring moral to it at the same time. That you do not need to make yourself the victim in thinking of yourself as unworthy or unappealing to the one you love, and that you have your own strength to fight your own battles and don’t necessarily need someone to defend or protect you all the time. You see, in this episode you are introduced to a couple, Minya and Hower, that fall into somewhat of an estranged relationship when Hower falls in love with Xena as soon as he meets her. Hower is the first person of the couple you get to know, but when you meet Minya, you find out she’s a big fan of the Warrior Princess, but begins to view her with disgust and jealousy when she realizes her boyfriend is attracted to her. Xena and Gabrielle, while occupied with their own married couple problems, have to sort this out and make it clear to Hower that he has no chance with Xena. Xena gives some advice to Minya on how to handle men and she becomes this strong, independent and extremely confident woman that knocks a warlord to his feet that impresses Hower and she no longer feels victimised by him or anyone else. This ignites the flame in their relationship again and Xena and Gabrielle learn to overcome their own differences in the meanwhile because of being inspired to by them. Furthermore, Xena, the brilliant strategic thinker she is, finds a way to kill two birds with one stone by stopping both an army and defeating a giant. There is this cute little moment in the middle of the episode where she tells Gabrielle that by defeating the giant Gareth, she be will repaying an old friend back from having to fight against him for ‘The Greater Good’, which ultimately led to his death. I thought that was very endearing. It’s a great episode. Funny, yet has a lot of substance to it. At least to me it does. It’s definitely my favourite comedy episode in the entire show and it is another great introductory episode to come to know the comedy and campy side of Xena because Xena isn’t dramatic and serious all the time and that’s part of its charm as a 90’s show.

2023-11-09 14:05:06 +0000 UTC*Fails to get a hit on Xena from the top of a roof and so embarrassingly falls to the ground and decides to pull herself up by grabbing on to Xena’s breast-plated tit* I see you, Grabrielle. This episode should have been called “Attempting to bang Xena” because… accurate. And she was successful in the end. Banging Xena. True love is being with someone who will affectionately annoy you for forever. You know I'd watch more romance in TV if there was a realistic portrayal of a romantic relationship between the characters. Even if they're not main - although screen time is required to have real character representation and development through romantic relationship - I'd settle. The hilarious - and most amazing - thing about Xena and Gabrielle is that that was a realistic depiction of a romantic relationship within a fantasy environment and storytelling. The show's setup was fake as fuck. Yet THEY felt very real. From the mundane conversations to the every day silent interaction between the characters. I mean 'A Day In The Life' was a "just doing nothing but doing it together" type of episode. Nothing dramatic or urgent going on in it. It was exactly like how a married couple would be on an daily basis of living together. "But that's boring ", you say. Precisely. A boring romance is a REAL romance. The entire show was like you were watching an every day average couple in real life thrust into the nuttiness of the ancient mythological greek world and fairytale storytelling. It's a bit like Enchanted but the opposite way around... And for a couple... I'd say. That "boring romance" doesn't even exist anymore in TV. Everything is always so serious if it's a romantic drama or so silly if it's a romantic comedy. Xena was a staple of it's time even with this. I can't even explain it. It was just so real but not so real at the same time. And there's nothing like it. There truly is nothing else like Xena and Gabrielle's relationship on TV. And if there is - I haven't seen it. Not lately. Not ever. Not in this lifetime.

2023-11-08 23:42:05 +0000 UTCAt this point in the show, Xena is starting to lose some of her stoicness and is starting to enjoy life with Gabrielle beside her. She has many more instances of happiness after the events of her near death in 'The Quest' and she's suddenly become someone so much full of life and is not repressed anymore. It's another reason why I think their relationship has moved into romantic territory. Because Xena now gets giddy around Gabrielle rather than just accepts that she's around her at all. There's suddenly so much more to it. Xena literally needs Gabrielle around her for her to function as the Xena you see in these scenes. The Xena that isn't constantly feeling guilty for her past. The Xena that is just a regular person like anyone else. Gabrielle provides that for her. In other words: so long as Gabrielle is around, the Xena that Xena longs to be is around. A Xena free of her mental slavery. A Xena not constantly tied to her redemption. A Xena that existed before Caesar's Cross. That's why 'Destiny/The Quest' are such important episodes. It's like she's reborn when she comes back from the dead. At the start of 'Destiny' she visits Cirra and immediately the waves of guilt and regret crash upon her, but with Gabrielle besides her who immediately sees this change in her, reminds her that she's full of life now, just like the valley is. And Xena responds that she wishes she could see it that way. And it's like after this 'Destiny/The Quest/A Necessary Evil' arc she can. And she embodies the spirit of someone who can. Yin cannot exist without Yang.

By no means was this an overlooked or low-key episode at all; it remains one of the favourites of the fanbase. Early season 1 episode tended to have our leads split up for most of the episode. I'm very glad they now see their chemistry as a main strength of the show and are more eager to showcase stories where they are together.

2021-10-31 05:01:08 +0000 UTCYeah this one is a big fan favourite and also the first Xena episode directed by Michael (Iolaus) Hurst. Lucy and Renee have a great time with the banter and it's a lot of fun to see those little everyday moments that would occur between adventures. Hower and Minya are a lot of fun too. There's a great set of bloopers from this episode too and i do suggest doing a reaction to the Xena bloopers at a later date cos they're very funny. I can let you know when would be a great time to do so and can provide you with them. I also love that we get a resolution to Goliath's storyline with the taking out of Gareth. Once again great forced perspective work with the intermixing of the giant and Xena.

I think it’s great, and it does also serve as a rest after the more-or-less trilogy we got immediately before. As it happens, the Gareth footage was originally to be a part of the Giant Killer episode, but was cut and used to good effect here. Don’t wanna be wasteful, surely.
