Xena: Warrior Princess 3x15 "King Con" Reaction

Xena: Warrior Princess 3x15 "King Con" Reaction

The only thing I care about in this episode is Joxer being beaten to an inch of his life and Xena and Gabrielle trying to protect him and get justice for what happened to him. Although I feel like it would belong in a different episode than this. The Xena/Rafe thing and Gabrielle supporting it until she realized it was just a bet…. Uncharacteristic. Don’t accept it. Probably the weakest of the season. Should have Auto in this one. Would have made it lots better. Especially because it would have developed the relationship between Joxer and Autolycus since ‘The King Of Assassins’ and he would have wanted to take down Tidas because of his thugs beating Joxer. It’s just… it could have been written better. There’s certain episodes that just don’t work and feel unnecessarily contrived. This is one of them. It’s like ‘Ulysses’. There’s no reason for it. It feels like the network demanded this episode to happen. It doesn’t work.

This episode is not a particular favorite of mine, although I don’t think of it as actually bad. (I don’t regard ANY Xena episode as bad at this point in the show. Just this is the low point compared to what else this show had to offer.) Joxer’s beating is affectingly severe, and probably stands out for me. ... That’s a LOT of gambling and playing card puns here. Like, a LOT. But go big or go home.

I did feel this would be moreso an Autolycus favourable story to be fair. This is more in his ball park for a story so it is sad he missed a story more in his nature. And no worries, so far based on my tests, I am hitting negatives so I may have dodged a bullet but thank you!

This episode is basically Xena's riff on the movie The Sting and for me ranks as another pretty dud episode which shares many similarities with why I didn't enjoy Forgiven. Joxer's violent beating seems to jar wildly with the tone of the rest of the episode and seems quite gratuitous for a show that normally handles its violence well, similar to Gabrielle's beating in the previous story. Rafe and Eldon I have to say I had little interest in and Rafe's "romancing" of Xena even less time for. If anything this kind of tale cried out for Autolycus' presence and had he been involved i think this episode might have had a chance of being more of a success for me. To be honest I feel that Seasons 1-3 pretty much didn't put a foot wrong until the last two episodes and both stories I tend to skip in re- watches. (Though there is a good blooper connected to this episode - the series bloopers are definitely worth reacting to at a later date). On a personal note, Liam, after hearing about the Covid news, please do your best to stay healthy there.
