A sunset shot from the end of ‘Return Of Callisto’ by the incomparable director T.J. Scott. Capturing the beauty of these two characters.

God this show is so gay. I mean this woman was all kinds of conflicted when Gabrielle decided that she wanted to marry Perdicas.
How to know if you’re kinda, sorta, maybe in love with your best friend.
If you make faces like Xena makes when she’s with someone else…
Or if any of these conflicting thoughts go through your head when she’s with someone else…
Left-brain: Least she’ll be happy.
Right-brain: But I’ll be unhappy.
Left-brain: Least she’ll never be lonely.
Right-brain: I’ll have nobody to travel with anymore.
Left-brain: She’s safer with him.
Right-brain: But if they’re ever attacked, will he even pick up a weapon?
Left-brain: It’s better this way.
Right-brain: Then why do I feel like my whole life has flashed before my eyes?
Or when you know that what really should be happening is you being with her when she’s with someone else…
Come on, Xena. She’s YOUR wife. You should be the one marrying her.

“The answers yes, Xena. I’m gonna marry him.”
You mean you’re going to save him or fix him.

Of course Callisto was going to return. ‘Callisto’ had the highest ratings out of the entity of Season 1 and Hudson’s performance was so astounding the creators would have to be nuts not to bring her back to cause havoc all over again.

This episode is the first you see of Gabrielle’s shows-long conflict and struggle with violence, killing and bloodlust. It’s a stunner of an episode simply because of this because ROC really embodies Gabrielle’s abject hatred and need for revenge at Callisto. It’s so good. One of the best S2 episodes. One of the best episodes overall.

hey we've already seen ghosts so you never know if we may see her again or not. Technically this was the husbands 3rd episode. He was there during the premier episode very briefly to point out the boy Gabrielle was betrothed to. You are starting to see some recurring characters. I mean Joxer did create a distraction allowing Xena to get her chakram back. so he unintentionally helped save the day in another fashion. (the sentiments of this episode have already been gone over by you and others)

I agree. This is the best episode of the series to thus far. Watching the series back with Liam, I really do see how the season 1 finale was a turning point. In deciding not to kill Gabrielle when they could have, they really recommitted to giving her some excellent development and material, and you love to see it! The "teach me to kill her" scene is so iconic precisely because we know all the history and foundations of Xena and Gabrielle's characters.
I also liked the softer moments in this episode. Xena reassuring Gabrielle that nothing has changed between them but saying goodbye to her in her heart was heartbreaking, as was Xena's prayer.

It’s easy to see why this episode is a standout. Gabby makes it for me more than anyone, even with great performances all around, because she, pushed into a desire for vengeance that nearly destroys her, is so intense and can’t be forgotten. Xena’s prayer is very good. Callisto is good at everything. And Joxer... Joxer’s so cool.

This is another great episode of the show with the return of the amazing Hudson Leick as Callisto. I'm really glad that you obviously don't know the episode titles before watching so you weren't spoiled about Callisto's return and your glee at seeing her back was great.
This episode also gives Renee O'Connor some great drama to sink her teeth into and the scene where she angrily demands Xena teach her to fight so she can gain vengeance on Callisto gives serious chills. It's also a classic example of Gabrielle's heart when she decides to marry Perdicus. I'm not doubting she had love for him but I feel she also did it to help protect him from the trauma fighting was causing in his soul. But it was definitely on the cards that the union wouldn't last long.....
Hudson is so great as Callisto because you get the sense of the pain underneath the madness and hatred in very subtle ways at times in her performance. I never forget as destructive as she is that there's a really damaged soul deep down in there and characters like that always appeal to me with those kinds of levels.
I'm glad they got TJ Scott to direct this episode as he helmed the first Callisto episode and his dynamic camerawork is just as compelling as it was then.
And also you get your first glimpse that underneath the apparently bungling outer persona there's a big heart in Joxer. It's quite touching when he tears into Callisto's lair to try to save Xena and Gabby.
