I love the family focus on many of the episodes. Both biological/blood and found family/created. I feel this is when the show is at its strongest. Family estrangement, unwilled pregnancy, forced marriage, parental neglect, abandonment and disownment, the jealousy and resentment of sibling rivalry and a mother’s deep shame because of the lead characters’ sinful actions of her past. This is when the show is at its most strong and substantial in my opinion. It’s what really hits the most. Glad you’re enjoying Season 2 so far. It’s probably my favourite after Season 3.

2021-08-06 19:16:58 +0000 UTCThe actor who played Dagnine previously portrayed the warlord in Hooves and Harlots. Xena the series re-uses a lot of their guest actors, especially those staying closer to the shooting location of New Zealand. Season 1 had one too, with the same actor playing the red herring Black Wolf and the father seeking revenge for his slain family in Callisto. He even had the same long hair in both roles and everything. "I did it without a sword and without being a warrior." As I mentioned in the S1 finale comments, I really enjoyed that they more clearly defined Gabrielle's character recently, and the main ways in which she is different from Xena. Completely agreed about Gabrielle's fighting. Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle) is such a natural athlete and takes so well to fight choreography. Looks like she did the overhead flip over that guy's shoulders in this episode herself too. For someone so tough and calculating in battle, it somehow still fells completely in character every time Xena goes vulnerable. And, as with season 1, she really shines in very emotional moments too. This being the opening episode for season 2 and leaving Borias completely unseen and Solan in the dark about Xena being his mother shows the show's intention to set up more personal explorations of Xena's character.

2021-08-06 00:23:04 +0000 UTCIndeed, this is a great and emotional opener to Season 2 and glad you enjoyed it :-) And Koz is so right about that end scene- with Lucy's acting, the slow-motion shot of the pain on her face and Joseph LoDuca's music it packs a real heartbreaking punch. It's also genuinely lovely to see the warmth of Xena with her son and helps to humanise her even more. And I also love Dagnine too and his whole "flair" as Liam put it. Shame it seems like we're not gonna see any more of him.....

2021-08-06 00:21:22 +0000 UTCThere is so much to commend this episode. The introduction of Solon, for one, and the weight of Xena’s having had a child, replete with the added dimension it gives her. Dagnine’s villainy! I really like his lines, both casual (“One of you gets my tent, the other gets my horse.”) and grand “I have the Ixion STOOOONNE!”) His transformed appearance. Gabby’s clash with Xena over telling Solon the truth. Lucy Lawless’ performance as a mother missing her son is heart-wrenching. I could go on. But I’ll just nite that the ending scene is terrific. So very good is the start of season two.
