Nah, I think it’s fairly put where it’s put in the fandom. They didn’t really do very well with the writing on this one.

Ah man. ‘Death Mask’ is such a disappointment. Easily one of the weakest episodes of the season. Probably the weakest actually after we’ve had such a strong episode with ‘Callisto’. But for such a great concept to explore they do very little with it. I mean THE MAN that created the monster in the same way Xena created Callisto. And THE MAN himself isn’t even that threatening or formidable. Why does he have the honour of creating evil Xena? I mean I know it’s a gradual progression from her getting to DESTROYER evil… but even so, he was the first step down Xena’s path to destruction and he is pitiful.

This week on ‘They’re So Married’
A bold as brass Bard tells off the deadly ex-Destroyer of Nations. Xena’s amused over Gabrielle having the audacity to talk to her like that when the men in her army would think twice about doing such a dangerous thing.
In other news… Xena has another brother… But that’s not important...

This is definitely an unfairly overlooked episode especially after following a classic like Callisto and I think the chemistry between Xena and Toris is really good and Lucy and Joseph Kell have some nice scenes together that really work well. My only disappointment with this episode has always been that i wish they had played Cortese as a more of a threat especially considering his place in Xena's history. I think Malik actually comes across with more evil presence here.

I like the actor who played Toris; I buy him, physically, as Xena’s brother. And, watching this just now, it seemed better than I usually think of it as being. Not that I thought it was terrible or anything, but I think I may have been selling it short.
