Xena: Warrior Princess 1x21 "The Greater Good" Reaction

Xena: Warrior Princess 1x21 "The Greater Good" Reaction

Regarding Gabrielle and Argo’s arc this episode,… there’s a deleted scene where when Gabrielle is attacking that tree and she falls down against it in grief and hopelessness. Argo comes over to her and they have a moment. That’s what informs Argo coming to her aid when Talmadeous captured her. I wish they had kept it in. I know it’s not all that important to the plot but it’s just a lovely moment that is what helps to develop on their relationship.

“Don’t you ever touch my horse again.” She said that to Gabrielle in ‘The Titans’ when she got Argo’s reins tangled, making her lose her momentum in fighting Hesiat. Quite a few of her phrases come back every now and again. Especially one. “I have many skills.”

I cried when I first saw this episode :( Gabrielle played her role so well and so did Xena. Just awesomeness. Thank you! 𓆩♡𓆪

From here on out this is when Xena gets GOOD and start to surpass Hercules in storytelling AND ratings lol

BTW, I deleted my post, and going back to lurk mode now 😕 Don’t post often on these Patreon posts… 99% of the time no one even acknowledges them. The one time they do… it’s to ask me to take it down for saying the thing with the big red neon sign saying they’re setting something up is indeed setting something up, and it’s pretty cool… so spoilers. Which, fine. But kinda done.

There’s so much to enjoy in this episode. Others have already talked about those things; I’ll just add that the more dramatic aspects of Salmoneus’ character are so well done (as is to be expected from Robert Trebor.) “Proud warrioress. I will miss you.” (And I know it’s been said, but Gabby is SOOO good.)

Hi! I don’t want to jump on you, but could you remove your comment about that character in the next episode? Even that qualifies as spoiler territory.

Though it was the title of the episode, we only got a small glimpse of the theme of personal sacrifice for "the greater good" in this episode. It is certainly an illuminating look into Xena's philosophy as a warrior for good though. It will be interesting to see how this outlook plays out in future scenarios too. There were a few scenes cut for time with this episode if I recall. Like how Argo got captured by the warlord and why Gabrielle came back to fight when she said she was going to find Iolaus for help the last time we saw her.

Looking forward to that mystery

Been very eager to see your reaction to this episode. In my opinion, this is the point in the show when an already great series starts to go to another level and also shows just how good humour can be mixed with genuine and potent drama in one episode. We're lulled by the return of Salmoneus into thinking this might be another light-hearted story then we take a complete 180 degree turn with Xena's sickness, apparent death and Gabrielle's grief and attempt to honour the Greater Good. Renee's acting is superlative in this episode and the scene when she lets loose her anger at losing Xena and tries to focus is so powerful. Her stand to bring her back really gives chills and is more important development in her character. Joseph LoDuca's great music helps sell the emotion too as well as Lucy and Renee's great chemistry. As for Xena's mystery attacker, stay tuned.....
