“That was cold.”
That’s was bloody brilliant. This is why he is one of the greatest characters in this entire show. Because of how far he goes to win Xena over but in the end,… he can’t set aside his feelings for her to do it. And Xena’s commitment to the greater good and Gabrielle’s love for Xena won’t let her be won over.
He has no choice but to just satisfy himself with the good Xena. She’s still a warrior at the end of the day. And war is war no matter what side it’s on. For good or for evil. For right or for wrong. For peace or for war.
And no matter how much he convinces himself that he loves the evil Xena. He doesn’t. He loves the good Xena and that’s a revelation he has to make at some point.

Apparently Ares has the powers of bilocation otherwise he couldn’t be in two places at the same time. Assuming the identity of Atrius and showing up to goad Kirillus.
You can see how it’s a convincing manipulation even to someone like Xena - a master of manipulation.
Maybe she truly is the daughter of Ares,

Love the respect Ares shows to Xena not despite her being a woman, but because of it. I mean he is cruel and violent but he is never a misogynist. Much like Spike.

They always seem to go for the private parts. Feminist show. Makes sense.

I remember feeling conflicted with this episode because Xena had the right to be mad ( I was like, "Go get 'em Xena!") but it would be wrong to hurt the villagers. I was so proud of Gabrielle for standing up to her best friend. Big moments in this one. Thanks for watching this show!!! 𓆩♡𓆪

While all 20 episodes have been stand-alones so far, I'm glad we got a recurring villain in Ares. He poses a unique challenge because he isn't someone Xena can physically kill, not does he want to beat or kill her. From The Reckoning as well as in this episode, it's clear Xena does find Ares and the lifestyle he offers tempting, but it is always Gabrielle who is able to pull Xena back.
Xena will have to grow as the series progresses though. Learn to let go of some of that guilt over her old life. And also to be more confident in her own new path; Gabrielle may not always be there to provide that support.
And after all this, Xena's real father is presumably still out there somewhere. It was a good plot element to introduce.

Xena snapping is among my favorite moments in this episode, which has a whole bunch of favorite moments. “TAKE THE VILLAGE!” Ares is so cool and seductive, Gabby so heartfelt and good, and Xena so on edge. Great one, this.
