Xena: Warrior Princess 2x13: The Quest Reaction

Xena: Warrior Princess 2x13: The Quest Reaction

Gabrielle: “She’s gone. She just left me. How could she do that? She just left. I really wanna hate her for it.” Iolas: “No. No, you don’t.” Gabrielle: “But I miss her.” This is when Gabrielle realized she was in love with Xena. It just came out of her and she smiled after as if it was the first time she recognized her own feelings for her and acknowledged that it was more than in a best friends way. It’s a beautiful moment of realization, for both of them. Of course, neither really had to say anything, did they?

Something struck me about Xena’s idea to possess the body of someone in order to get her own body back. If she was able to possess Gabrielle’s body to fight Velasca when she was after the ambrosia… why didn’t she just possess Gabrielle’s body from the get go? Like if it was an option to begin with - why bother involving Autolycus at all? Hell, she wouldn’t even need to steal her body back from the Amazons if she had gotten to Gabrielle in time and let her in on the plan. Why is she always so secretive about this stuff? Not to mention it would have made Gabrielle feel a lot better about Xena being dead if she could contact her.

Autolycus discovers Xena and Gabrielle’s true relationship “first hand”. Gabrielle thanks Autolycus for allowing Xena to use his body to kiss her. Then later on, Gabrielle asks him to get his hand off her butt, alluding to the assumption that Xena actually grabbed it while kissing her. I always wonder whether using Autolycus was an excuse for Xena to touch Gabrielle’s butt with her being unaware of it, and she can just blame him for it because he is always his perverted self, even though he clearly had no idea he was ever touching her there... or... was Gabrielle playing along to try and make it seem like it was an innocent move even though she was aware Xena was the one who did it? The King of Thieves was out-conned!i  This scene was both sentimental and hilarious at the same time. Autolycus was the first one to know that Xena and Gabrielle were best friends with benefits. He was the witness to them just starting to show their feelings for one another and acting on their desires. Friends evolving into lovers. It’s probably the most memorable moment in all of ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’.

The kiss with no "excuse" behind it. No hiding behind the pretences of transfering water or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The only sham in this kiss is that it's delivered by a man. But it's all in Xena's control. And the idea of "I wanna kiss you." and "I will" and Gabrielle accepts.

Whenever I watch this episode, it puzzles me why Auto had to steal Xena's body from Amazons. Xena could have proved to Gabrielle that she was inside Auto by saying something only she and Gabrielle would know or simply jumped into Gabrielle herself like she did later in the episode.

I've been waiting over a month to say this. :D In your Return of Callisto reaction, you were ready to squeal with delight when Xena and Gabrielle leaned in to each other after Gabrielle's wedding, only for you to move on when it turned out to be a chaste peck. Could see that you thought you were reading into things. As of this episode, we can more confidently say... no you weren't imagining things all those times before, that "ship" reading is definitely there and we are here for it!

I'm sad lucy got hurt but damn did it make for some good episodes. This and Ten Little warlords are in my tops for the season, and it's a pretty stellar season start to finish.

Yes, this is indeed a great episode and a big favourite. It's also another of the episodes that was shot around Lucy's recovering from her accident. It does allow Renee to have some great focus as Gabrielle is bestowed Queen of the Amazons (and she looks absolutely gorgeous!!) and allows her some great moments. Great to see Ephiny and Auto again and I too wish Iolaus could have stayed a little longer in the episode too- his scene with Gabrielle is very touching and helped by the fact that Michael Hurst and Renee have a great chemistry (I've done some Iolaus-Gabrielle shipping in my head from time to time I will admit). Melinda Clarke is always great when she pops up in shows and her turn as Velasca here is also highly enjoyable. As you said a great mixture of dramatic emotion and great humour all rolled into one this ep- a great balance with such varied elements.

It’s a great episode, and made even more impressive when the title character is mostly a voice over for almost all the episode. Having Auto on hand is never anything but good, and I love that Iolaus just happens by. I like seeing him and Gabby together when she’s mourning Xena; at a time like this, she should be with “family.” I only wish Iolaus had offered to stay with her on the way to Amphipolis; clearly it’s dangerous, and they could even plan to pick up Herc. He could still leave when they meet the Amazons, feeling she’s safe now. But oh well.
