Honestly… I love the editing in this ending scene. On the surface Gabrielle is begging Xena to stay alive but she is unknowingly also begging Xena not to go dark. She can’t save Xena from dying at the moment but she does end up bringing her back just like she couldn’t save Xena from her darkness the first time around but is able to many times over down the road. No kisses (at least not yet) and still the greatest love story ever told.

2023-11-08 20:05:25 +0000 UTCWell you could say that Callisto had a kind of indirect influence on Xena's injury in this episode as she was near the ruins of Cirra when it happened. I always felt though that Xena made the wrong call with the tribe at the beginning of the episode. When it was clear they saw her as some kind of deity, she might have been able to use that belief to bluff her and the prisoners out of the situation without violence. In this instance, her choosing to fight was maybe not the ideal first call as the consequences clearly show. I guess it was destiny indeed at work.

2021-10-14 04:05:17 +0000 UTCYes, Karl Urban is the gift that keeps on giving in the Xenaverse- he's superb as Caesar and its a great performance. His betrayal of Xena and the death of M'Lila are definitely the catalysts that change Xena from someone defending her homeland to the truly Evil Xena. (This is well before her meeting of Hercules in the timeline). The last few minutes of this episode are searing- chilling as we see that transformation happening in Xena that will bring a lot of ruthless death to the world at the same time emotional as we apparently face losing her again in the present- Gabrielle's speech to her to come back breaks me up every time backed up by Joseph LoDuca's beautiful and powerful music.

XD Totally get what you meant... it is that "seed of good" that got planted that wouldn't blossom till many years later. You are definitely in good company in placing this episode among the best of season 2.

It’s quite understandable that you, or anyone, would rank this among the best of season two. I certainly do. ... While M’Lila may have put some good into Xena, my interpretation has always been that this is the turning when Xena goes from a warrior being ruthless and dangerous, but ostensibly acting to defend her homeland, to being a cold-blooded murderer. This is indicated by Xena declaring after M’Lila was killed and Xena terminated the Romans that she was a new Xena with a new purpose in life: death.
