“She was the finest friend anyone could ever have!” I love how Xena defends Gabrielle to others when she’s not around. She explains how important and useful she is to her. Making the times when Gabrielle gets called “the useless tag-along” or “the irritating blonde” seem obsolete. I’ve never thought of Gabrielle that way. She’s always been just as strong of a character as Xena for me, if not more. Even stronger than Xena in some ways. She possessed emotional strength the likes I’ve never seen before. I think people who are just starting out in watching the show should give her a chance because her evolution is immense. She’s always been a warrior in her own ways. Even in the early episodes when words were her greatest weapon instead of a staff or the sais. She was so much more than just a sidekick and companion to Xena. They were best friends that evolved into lovers. Gabrielle was Xena’s everything and Xena was Gabrielle’s everything. Each others ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’. She was never useless! I won’t let anyone think of her that way!

2023-11-08 14:21:02 +0000 UTCAnother great thing about Xena or the Xenaverse I should say. It’s incredibly meta and self-referential. They don’t do shit like this now for reasons you mentioned. It’s very risky. The Xena creators didn’t care. They just wanted to have some fun. And you can really feel that in them. There’s a pretty strong headcanon theory because of this episode and a few of the other Uber/modern day episodes that the entire show is told through Gabrielle’s perspective through the Scrolls that she wrote. Rewriting the history of the Ancient world as Janice Covington explained. It’s a very well thought out theory actually and one I partially subscribe to myself as I wrote a historical fanfiction story with Janice and Mel crossed over with the Universe of The Mummy movie franchise. It was only 10 chapters but I felt like their story could carry on and meeting Rick and Evie along the way wouldn’t have hurt. 😆 This is a great episode considering it’s just a clip show episode. Very inventive idea. And yes, that was absolutely Ted Raimi as himself in the 90’s delivering the Scrolls to Robert Tapert. Who of course created Xena.

A lot of this has been covered already, but I will add that the mummy and werewolf clips are not from Universal’s lineup, so I still wonder where they were from. I should check on that. Anyway, it’s great clip show fun, and I love “the tomb of Ares.” That just sounds cool. ... Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi’s longtime production partner, maybe looked better with a goatee.

2021-10-01 00:59:13 +0000 UTCWAY more than a simple clip show (as all of Xena's clip shows are) I think this shows you just how you can never predict what this series will deliver next- and that's why its such a great one! It's great to see Lucy, Renee and Ted playing descendants of the familiar trio coming up against Ares in a future time and that moment when Mel turns with the sword and becomes full Xena is iconic! I've always been really fond of this episode and glad despite your confusion at the beginnning that you enjoyed it. And the whole ending is wonderfully creative and meta with the cameo appearance of producer Robert Tapert (Lucy's hubby) and the whole concept that the series itself was inspired by the Xena scrolls. On your mention of Sam Raimi, he actually had little to do with the general production of the series, that was down to Rob and others. Though having his name as an executive producer was a very shrewd move!

2021-10-01 00:48:30 +0000 UTCOne of the more unique presentations of a clip show episode on TV. You'll find that all 6 seasons have a clip show episode, some more interesting than others. It was also nice to see Lucy, Renee and Ted play different types of characters. Glad you are starting to see more and more of how completely over the top and out of the box Xena the series gets. You'll find that this show is very VERY of the discussions and preferences of its fan base.
