2021-09-17 12:36:54 +0000 UTCAnother fun thing is that Michael and Eleanor are still connected even beyond eternity. When he arrived on Earth and commented that it was a hot but dry heat, it was clear that he went to Arizona. I particularly loved your reflection on the willful end of existence. But I think it goes to show how much of our consciousness is defined by our sense and awareness of time. In any given moment when we are complete, we move on to something else. It is almost impossible for us as living humans to imagine anything else. On the one hand, it translates to our perspective of death. But that was the point of the Good Place. Past death, they moved on to eternity. And in eternity, there can be a "nothing else" that doesn't actually mean loss of life or sensation of living. My dad died a few months ago of non-covid related causes. And in his declining health, his biggest struggles were with his own sense of unfinished business or unfulfilled goals. In a sense, our four humans had no unfinished business or unfulfilled goals. It is hard to picture, but it is in effect what resulted in their feeling complete and sated. I can't imagine it myself. But the show clearly depicted that that is where they arrived at. Even Shawn. But he was and remained an eternal being. Which is what made Michael's greatest wish, and the judges reticence, all the more powerful and anomalous. I am very grateful that you allowed us to watch your first viewing with you.

2021-09-17 07:30:54 +0000 UTCThis was masterful, the best series finale in a decade. And watching the whole thing again with Liam just made me catch many new gems. I cannot get over how much care they put into writing each character right and in bringing out the message! Things like Jason re-appearing and talking about his several eternities meditating seemed like something added in a 9th or 10th draft of the script after they went through it with so much love and sought out ways to make little adjustments to make things even better. Also smaller things like having John drop by for a cameo at Tahani's farewell party because the character wasn't in any other scenes, or like getting Ted Danson's real life wife to play the guitar teacher. Derek wasn't forgotten, Brent wasn't forgotten, even in cases where perhaps the guest stars weren't available like with Eleanor's mom, they still got a mention on how they were doing. This finale was so well thought out with so much love put into it. The complete throwaway moment which I thought best exemplified this excellence was that background story of Jeff (the doorman) growing increasingly bored of his frog gifts each time we see him in this episode. Then he gets so excited again when Michael finally gifts him a real frog, showing that there is always something out there to look forward to even in an unfulfilling life. And his first frog was tiny too... meaning he still has the joys of discovering larger frogs of different species in the future. Loved it, loved it, loved it! 10/10 series finale.

One fun detail to watch out for on your next viewing: The music under the final credits for this finale. It's the "Marshmallow cat" song that Michael has been trying to write forever.
