But Hudson … Damn. Just as well too because she had a second episode to portray Xena in Callisto’s body since Lucy was down for the count with an injury. That’s why they did this whole body swap scenario. To let Hudson take the reigns for awhile. Giving Lucy her time to recover. Ares was a fool to think that sex would have been Callisto’s satisfaction instead of vengeance. Especially considering she has no interest in love or physical intimacy of any kind. Pleasure to her is a foreign concept and she believes she can only gain it through causing Xena the same pain that she caused her. Ares was out of his league with this one because any manipulation tactics she would turn right back on to him.

Back then, the cast announcements wouldn't be as widespread and there wouldn't be many places online to discuss it as with Doctor Who regenerations today. Nonetheless, Hudson Leick (formerly Callisto) does get the cadence of Xena's voice and mannerisms right in her first episode. Her run as the 2nd Xena will be interesting! ;P

Callisto is one of my favorite villains in TV ever. Ha, the Doctor Who regeneration comment made me laugh. As great as the body swap in Buffy was, the use of the same storyline in this episode was executed just as beautifully. Lucy Lawless and Hudson Leik got the mannerisms of their respective characters down really well. It's funny to think that this show actually did it first, a couple of years before Buffy. I know other shows had done it before this one, too, but I don't think many of them did it as well as this one. This was the first show to pull it off so beautifully. Buffy paved the way for a lot of shows that came after it, heavily changing the way we look at storytelling and TV. So many shows play out the way they do because of Buffy. But it's always felt like Xena paved the way for Buffy. Buffy showed writers and producers how to give us good TV, but Xena was the first show to write a female hero in a consistently well written, strong way without ever falling into the traps of oversexualization, cruelty or bitchiness, or ever making her look weak in order to make men look better. If not for Xena, there would be no Buffy, because this show is what helped people see what a well-written heroine could be and accept it. Buffy is the train track on which a lot of TV runs. Xena is the gateway we first had to step through to get there.

2021-09-17 00:58:14 +0000 UTCA body swap is a classic concept, and it’s a very interesting twist when Xena DOESN’T get her body back. The screwing with the mind in the beginning with all the dreaming is very good as well. In fact, this episode is full of good stuff, including the guest cast. Callisto! Ares! Hades! Joxer! And even Xena’s mom! Who could ask for more? (Plus I like the little Hercules reference. 😁) Really a great piece of work.

2021-09-17 00:52:31 +0000 UTCLove how much you were gobsmacked by the apparent keeping of Xena in Callisto's body :-) This show does do the unexpected. I'm not going to say much more right now or divulge whether we'll see Lucy as Xena again as I feel you should be kept in a little bit of suspense for now....Excellent episode though with both actresses getting a chance to play their opposite and doing it very well. Hudson Leick said it was quite a challenge to rein in her usual body dynamics to play Xena's strong stillness but i think she did an excellent job.
