Xena Warrior Princess 1x05: "The Path Not Taken" Reaction

It can honestly happen to anyone. Humanity is flawed and fallible and that’s just the realism of it. There’s no shame in it. Just something we have to learn to accept about ourselves. That we can be capable of falling into the abyss, losing ourselves in the process. That’s what makes Xena such a highly relatable character. Her story isn’t a one-note evil to good. There are complexities and those complexities remain right until the very end.

Marcus and Gabrielle? LOL.

“My friend.” Xena’s always says that word with such reverence regardless whether it’s romantic or platonic. You know, whenever I’d watch this show years ago I wished they wouldn’t refer to each other as “family” or “friend” because that was untrue to what they really were to each other. But now I realize you can be all of that to someone and still be their lover or soul mate. You can be whatever they need you to be in the moment. Xena and Gabrielle became whatever they needed to be for each other to fill a gap in their lives and in their hearts and that’s real love. True love.

I like Gabrielle’s optimism maintained even while she’s locked in the stocks. 😁 Marcus was a likable figure, even while working for someone as repugnant as Mezentius. Plus we learned that Marcus and Gabrielle once had a thing. 👀

Liam, you mentioned wanting to see the core group expand as the show continues much like the regulars on Angel. Any wish list for character archetypes you want to see join Xena and Gabrielle in the future?

I really like this episode, and really like Marcus as a character. Enjoying revisiting this series with you.

Yes, this episode does do such a good job of making us like Marcus that his demise at the end becomes very touching and emotional. There's a really nice chemistry between Lucy Lawless and Bobby Hosea in this episode too that really helps to make their relationship convincing. Plus there's the powerful song "Burial" too by the funeral pyre which was actually written and performed by Lucy herself.

Even in the first episode Draco had a story of how he tried to return home. It shows how she's not alone in second guessing life and it can be a slippery slope from Marcus to Draco
