Summers Heat Timelapse

It's been a bit since I've posted something for Timelapse Tuesday. Sorry about that! This summer has just been speeding by. I can't believe we're already in September, the first week of which is typically one of the hottest of weeks here in Florida. Both of which reminded me of this Rachel Summers I drew last year.

Couple things of possible interest in this one: About halfway, for whatever reason, I was struggling with what to do with Rachel's right hand. So I pulled in something close to what I was envisioning to get me through the mental guck. You'll notice the reference only shows up for the briefest of moments though. This is because I only looked at it, studied it, than tossed it away so I wouldn't straight up copy it. This way I keep to my own style AND I learn something new! Win win! To me, that's part of the fun of drawing. The struggle and then the achievement, even if it's just the position of a wrist and a few fingers.

Another fun thing is toward the end watching me go through various ideas of what to do with her phoenix force. Originally I thought it was going to be a lot my more flat or graphic, but in the end I went with something more natural and subtle. Happy I landed where I did. It fits the softness of her pose much better.

Other than that, this drawing came out pretty easily compared to most. Based on the length, I'd say somewhere between 5-6 hours from concept to finish rather than the usual 10-12. And I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out.

I hope everyone had a nice extended weekend! I ended getting out my studio yesterday and Kayaking down one of the freshwater springs north of us with friends and family. It was fun, relaxing, and exactly the mental break I needed. Back in the studio today with hopefully some new art for you later in the week. Hmm.. Jubilee... Rachel Summers... guess I'm kinda in an X-Girl kick. This could potentially end up being another X-Tember (albiet a much more milder one). If everyone is cool with that.
