ES-DE 3.2.0-45 is now available for download
Added 2025-04-04 16:07:30 +0000 UTCWe're happy to announce that ES-DE 3.2.0-45 for Android is now available for download!
This release brings support for themeable system status indicators showing the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular and battery status for devices where such hardware is available. There is also a themeable clock added which can be enabled from the UI settings menu. Two new game systems have been added, Vircon32 Virtual Console (vircon32) and Sega Mark III (mark3). Additionally there is support for a lot of new emulators, both standalone and RetroArch cores. The game launch screen can also be completely disabled as of this release.
Note that the emulator MAME4droid 2024 has been renamed to MAME4droid Current by its developer, and as such new alternative emulator entries have been added to ES-DE. For the time being the old MAME4droid 2024 entries are retained, but these will be removed in a future ES-DE release. So make sure to change your configuration to use MAME4droid Current instead.
In addition to the above there are large internal changes to the application to improve the theme engine, most notably for the helpsystem element which has been largely rewritten. This leads to much more granular control by the theme developers, and together with numerous other theme engine improvements this opens up more flexibility as far as theme design is concerned.
Make sure to update your themes regularly in the coming days as theme support for the new systems and 3.2.0 functionality is getting rolled out after the release.

2025-08-08 11:07:31 +0000 UTCHi, the problem is that Google has crippled Android TV/Google TV by removing SAF support so ES-DE and most emulators can't run on there even if there was a 32-bit build. This needs to be resolved by Google. The Nvidia Shield is however an Android TV device where Nvidia has reintroduced SAF support and made the OS 64-bit, and ES-DE therefore supports this device. So ES-DE does in fact run on Android TV assuming it's a proper OS with full SAF support. GammaOS is another example of Android TV-based operating systems where ES-DE runs fine.

2025-07-09 16:12:03 +0000 UTCES-DE requires 64-bit Android 10 or later. Normally TV devices run a 32-bit operating system and they're also usually crippled as SAF support has been removed. There are exceptions like the Nvidia Shield that has a custom 64-bit Android TV operating system. Probably your device is using a 32-bit Android TV OS so it won't be compatible.

This makes ES-DE and many emulators unusable. And the OS is 32-bit as well, so this will need to change to 64-bit. It's very surprising that Google/Android TV is still in this state. Some vendors like Nvidia have made good custom Android TV releases though that have SAF support and runs a 64-bit OS. The Nvidia Shield is such a device and it's supported by ES-DE. So technically ES-DE does actually run on Google/Android TV already.

I have one doubt (and I've searched for the answer and couldn't find it): everything works except 3DS via Azahar. I've tried the custom system .xml files and all of that but I keep getting the same error "NO BOOTABLE GAME PRESENT". If I launch Azahar, it plays the roms no problem, but frontended via ES-DE it doesn't work. Any light on this issue? Am I doing something wrong? Again, thanks for the amazing work.

I selected the emulator correctly through the alternative emulators settings, but when I try to open a game from the console of those specific emulators through ES-DE, the message: "Error lauching game 'gamename' (error code 1)" appears. I use the paid version of those emulators and the games works if I try to open the game directly in the emulator.

So I think Anbernic will need to fix it in their firmware. You can still download themes manually and place them in the ES-DE/themes directory to work around the problem. So force-disabling it will completely disable the rotation functionality. But at least on other Android devices there's an option to ignore the orientation sensor. Since the console determines its orientation not from the screen but from the control panel, the screen flips even when I slightly tilt the device. It's very frustrating.

ES-DE looks better, runs better, crashes far less, and has a lot more features - all for a fraction of the price. Having used ES since the Raspberry Pi 3 days and on various retro handhelds and then ES-DE on Steam Deck, it's a pleasure to use the same familiar frontend on Android too. Launchbox is now banished from my phone and I will be replacing Windows Launchbox with ES-DE for Windows imminently as well. Keep up the good work!

I am not sure where to go from here, it just flat out doesn't work in my Galaxy S25. But really it didn't work great in PC either, same issue, even though in PC I altered the rules, still only worked on a few of them. It's a great looking front end, i like how it's put together, it's just not functional in my experience. At least not on PC or android, works great through emudeck.... just not emudeck for android

It's strange that you are able to comment on this post when it's in this state though. Perhaps there is some glitch/bug on Patreon somehow. Edit: As discussed on Discord this was apparently due to the subscription being gifted, which is brand new functionality. So I've updated the distribution list accordingly and I'll keep these type of subscriptiosn synced as well in the future!

There are third parties that have created modified version of Android TV that work with ES-DE though, like the Nvidia Shield and GammaOS.

And for most emulators you need to exit the game or otherwise the last game you played will continue when you launch the emulator again. There is only one Sega 32X emulator on Android so there is nothing to select between. And for all systems that have alternative emulators you can select between then both system-wide and per-game.

2025-04-05 16:09:10 +0000 UTCA bit bummed that there are a few things missing. Dolphin for Handheld emulator is still missing from the emulator list. Sega32x tab doesn't show any emulators available. Sometimes the app launches the previous game you've picked in the emulator. It doesn't let you pick Retroarch and the corresponding core like in the Beacon launcher. All in all I hope these issues are fixed eventually. I love the look and feel of this frontend. I'd just love it to run and accommodate everything.

So my question is when you guys drop an update is it easy to apply to the current version? Or do I have to like re-set everything up. Thank you in advance for this awesome front end!
