i love you so so much...

the urge to get a second cat with my roommate is getting pretty strong. ever since my roommate brought their cat, i've been trying to play with her so she doesn't get bored out of her mind. my roommate and I work a lot, so I feel bad when we have to leave her. We buy her lots of toys, and try to give her enrichment activities every single day. we spoil her with lots of love and food as well, but I feel like she's still bored. So recently i brought up the idea of getting another cat, so she has a friend. she previously had kittens living in the same house as her, though not very long, maybe like 3 months. she never liked them that much. i'm not sure if its because they were boy kittens, or its because she isn't very socialized. we think that getting a cat around her age will make the addition more smooth. my roommate wants to give her a sister, whereas I want her to have a brother. I wouldn't mind another girl cat but i want a boy because I used to take care of a stray colony of boys.

any cat-parents have suggestions, or had a similar experience?
