To spot the enemy, you climb atop the highest point for the best view. An unexpected light source at night, figures moving in the distance, smoke of campfires rising above the canopy — those are the signs that alert you. Sometimes, however, threat comes not from afar, but from below your feet.
The guards heard a loud rumble under the floor, went downstairs to investigate, and found that the wall of the basement had crumbled. It could not have been a rat — not even a giant one could have caused this. Beyond the broken wall, they discovered a tunnel. They took their weapons and torches before they descended into the depths that would soon become their grave.
They were not killed immediately; instead, they were distributed among the monsters by their master, the Depthdweller. One was left with the gricks, and they hung him on the spikes of the craggy cave. Another was given to the ochre jellies and promptly eaten. The last guard was experimented on, afflicted with a deadly disease and taken by the chuuls, who kept him paralyzed for days.
