I like how this episode is a mirror to that last one, religion vs science, and how they both have good and bad things with them.

The lesson I believe with Shou Tucker is that Alchemists, though aren't foreign in this world, have a power that is looked at as an amazing thing. And just like any type of power you have those that abuse it and think they are "above" those below. Which is what makes Ed testament in the rain that much more powerful "But even so, we're not devils, let alone gods. We're human. We're only human!" Tucker was more obsessed with staying a state alchemist and not living in poverty again than his own daughter.
