The war is more of Miyazaki and his hate of the Iraq war, he added that plot in. The original story is about Howl running from the witch of the waste who wants him back. Also Howl's first line in the movie is "There you are sweetheart. Sorry I'm late. I was looking everywhere for you." Which is a reference to Sophie going back in time.
