I think the specific image he was trying to avoid is that of a sort of “uncivilized” “simple” or “dumb” “country bumpkin.” I think of that kind of stereotype of a hillbilly, for example: the country cousins episodes of that’s so raven. I think in the 90’s… and hell… even today, people from rural areas were looked down on, not only by high society, but from their own people across the diaspora. I think the city story for Philip gave him a little more edge and cleaned him up a little bit.
