Also Tahj Mowry was an easy scapegoat, since his parents did make a play for a (deserved) pay increase. But the real reason Smart Guy was cancelled was the change in the WB’s direction. For those that were there at the time, the WB and UPN used to have a lot of black led shows. We were really fed back then. On WB, we had Wayans Bros, Smart Guy, Sister Sister, the Jamie Foxx show, Steve Harvey, For Your Love. On UPN, we had One on One, the Parkers, Moesha, Malcom and Eddie, Half and Half, In The House, All of Us, etc. But then WB decided it wanted to focus on the more teen and adult oriented shows. And later most were abandoned during the merger between WB and UPN. So many shows suffered after the change to CW. Including popular ones like Veronica Mars. Meanwhile Smart Guy gets moved to Disney and suddenly plotlines that were ok on WB became forbidden on Disney leading to the censorship of episodes and the quality of the show went down. So long story long, they wanted to make room for “broader” I.e white content.
