I kinda believe this was originally the ending where Joey wasn’t with either and it was left open. Sure seemed like a series finale, but then the original creator and who based this on his life, Kevin Williamson, said he wanted to return and create a true final episode, 23/24. Kevin left between seasons 2 and 3. He’d said I think if he hadn’t of left after season 2, the plan was Joey and Dawson to end together. And he may never had even had Joey and Pacey get together. So he wanted to direct and end the show with his vision I guess but he’s said in a reunion special that as he was writing and filming, and with help from Katie and Joshua themselves, he decided not to end with Dawson and Joey. But that was his intention when he first started writing this extra finale.
