It's so interesting to me that you perceive the Pacey/Joey pairing this season as random and out of the blue, lol. Remember that when they broke up at the end of S4, after an entire year together in a very passionate and intimate relationship, on the heels of building up their love story and them falling in love the previous season 3, doesn't mean that their connection and chemistry hasn't always been there on the surface just waiting to combust at any moment, and what you are seeing in the back half of S6....is finally acknowledging what's always been there between them, and what the fans have always seen.
I think you are getting a bit stuck on the fact that we have seen both Pacey and Joey attempt to have other relationships and move on, but that doesn't mean that they have or that they succeeded at it, lol. There's a reason those relationships with other people never worked out. I understand wanting to see a bit more of them with regards to their past relationship and love for each other during these college years episodes, but in order for the show to attempt to tell what they did during this span of the characters' lives, they had to try and give everybody a clean slate in order to bring in other characters to try and showcase a more realistic college experience for the gang, and that just wouldn't have happened had Joey and Pacey never broke up.
Plus, they really needed to do some growing up and soul searching individually as well. But I digress.... I'm getting off topic, lol. I just wanted to point out that it's been rather obvious that Pacey and Joey's connection, chemistry, passion, and love for each other has always been there and very present, even when they were with other people, and we weren't getting hints of a rekindling romance just yet. The dialogue and scenes between the other characters in reference to them spoke volumes imo.
But don't worry....I'm not going to spoil anything for you or reveal how the rest of this season plays out, or what happens in the series finale, but just know that love triangles and Joey's indecisiveness have always been huge running themes throughout this show, hehe. And I thought that Sex and Violence was a perfect name for the episode, and I very much enjoyed seeing PJ engage in office combat with banter and jealously mixed in. It's what they do best after all, lol, so seeing Joey go insane over Pace and the reporter, was amusing as all get out, lol. I love seeing the incredibly hot and passionate PJ just give into what they really want, and then continue the moment at the bar, and then make plans for the rest of the night at Pacey's place. They are the most natural and realistic couple on this show, and it's been long overdue in my opinion, so I've very much enjoyed every second of these past few episodes :)

Since you record ahead, Brian reminder, Dawson 6x22 is season 6’s finale. Ties all season 6 storylines up.
Then 6x23/6x24 flashes forward 5 years (but doesn’t say on screen) so just know this ahead of time so not confused on 6x23.
Also, The writers just wanted a who will she choose kinda thing it seems, so they gotta have her show interest in a few. They didn’t want people to forget about her and Pacey, and reintroduced Eddie, and there’s always Dawson. That’s the kinda show they wanted to lead to a finale. Guess they didn’t think finale would be as good if who she ended up with, she was with for awhile upto the end, wouldn’t be as much a mystery to look forward to.

Joey and Pacey did kinda have a moment at the house party with spin the bottle, Pacey kinda realized it during the night and putting her to bed that he was not really over her. And Joey drunk was hinting a little in my mind with her ramblings that he was never over her.
If they’d never been together then not much buildup wouldn’t make sense, but they spent nearly a year together so maybe a rekindling of them wouldn’t need much buildup. And we don’t know how long it was between that party and when Pacey had Joey go on that double date thing before they got locked in store. So at least Pacey had time to think about it awhile, and what he did in store reignited Joey some with feelings.
The playful fighting was cute in my mind, lol.
