i think it only works cause it's high school so they're new to dating. Like, if she wanted to date someone else, she should clarify with ricky what their 'break' is and see where they truly stood on seeing other people. To me, a break means we're still exclusive, just not going out a lot and taking time for ourselves for whatever reason.

NiNi dumped Ricky because she told him she loved him, he didn’t say it back and then asked her to go on a break where he also admitted he was seeing other girls. She dated one guy and she liked him better so I don’t see her as being a jerk. He left her hanging right before she went to camp and I would be mad too if I was her tbh
