Gilmore Girls "Let the Games Begin" 3x8 Reaction (Brian)

Comments

While all of that is true that Rory needs to be open to other options, all of that reasoning was not really the intention. The moment Richard learned that Rory wanted to go to Harvard, he said that she needs to go to Yale because that is where their family goes. Richard’s mother said the same thing. Doing this was not really about Rory’s well being but more about Rory being able to do things the “Gilmore way”. You have to remember Lorelai’s history with her parents. She grew up feeling like she had no options with her parents. So anytime she feels like her parents are trying to control things or take away hers or Rory’s choices, she’s not going to react well. Even if it does seem well intended and logical.

Nepotism and upper class white privilege aside, do you know how it's obvious that what Richard did was entirely selfish and had nothing to do with the betterment of Rory's future? He gave her ZERO preparation. Even if Rory wasn't anal about going into a situation fully prepared, this is a college interview. This is an IVY LEAGUE interview. It's not an interview to get a part time job at Walmart. Hell, even then, a reasonable person would be appropriately prepared - the right attire, the right attitude, etc. Rory was completely blindsided. Even she herself said that if he had just ASKED her, like he asked her to tour Yale with him, she would have said yes and she would have had a better answer than Gloria Estefan. She could have done a LOT worse being put under a whole lot of pressure with two seconds worth of notice. You have to remember that Rory is Richard and Emily's 2nd chance. They don't just see their lovely granddaughter when they look at her - they see an opportunity to set the Gilmore name back on track because to people like them, reputation is EVERYTHING and Lorelai humiliated them 17 years ago. They never got over it. And while this particular manipulation wasn't EVIL or malicious, it wasn't done out of the goodness of Richard's heart either. He WANTS Rory to choose Yale, damn whatever plan she had with Lorelai, and if he has to get tricky about it, then so be it. So long as she continues the Gilmore legacy. Lorelai WAS right that he was being manipulative so she had every right to be upset because she knew that Rory was entirely unprepared and it could have actually hurt her chances had she not pulled it together in the interview room. Rory also had every reason to be upset because he never warned her, gave her the time to prepare and make an effort the way she would have wanted to. And, as we can see at the end of the episode, both Lorelai and Rory would have ended up considering Yale anyway had they just brought it up as a rational discussion. Rory has to apply to more than one university, after all. There was no reason why Yale couldn't have been one of the options. Instead he took an entirely dramatic route, then gaslit them both and called Lorelai an idiot for not "understanding the system". This is all, again, nepo baby privileged problems but I don't think any of us would have liked to be thrown an opportunity that had a 99.9% chance of going badly because we were thrown to it without getting prepared for it.

I think Richard, and Emily at times, act as though Rory is Lorelai. The pair are definitely best friends and so similar but can approach things very differently. Especially in academia. And also their relationships are different. Where Richard probably had to sneak around things in order to get Lorelai to do something, he didn’t realize he could’ve just asked Rory to check out Yale with him and take an interview. Rory’s smart, she would’ve known it would be beneficial for her, even if she is set on Harvard. Also I’m pretty sure the show said Yale is closer to home than Harvard.

the problem isn’t what richard did, it’s how he did it. rory was right, he should have told her what she was getting herself into. ivy league interviews are no joke, and she could have been much better prepared. he also always does things under lorelai’s nose, and then doesn’t understand why she doesn’t trust him or react well to what he does. if he took the time to sit down with the girls and have an open and honest conversation with them, encouraging rory to apply to more schools than just harvard and yale, this would have gone much better. richard isn’t concerned about safety schools for rory, he just wants her to go to yale. that’s what frustrates lorelai.

I love this episode tho ❤️

Okay so love Richard’s intentions but I don’t like how he handled it and Rory said it best herself she would have done the interview and she would have done it right he just needed to ask her first before throwing her Into a important high pressure situation. Also the distance thing actually Harvard is farther away than Yale Emily even said in this episode to Lorelei something like have you considered if she went to Yale she could live at home
