Q1: better late than never
Added 2025-06-03 23:40:09 +0000 UTCThank you all so much for your saintly patience with Q1.
I knew that, in the early part of 2025, I would be fully distracted attending to print production on Alphabet in Motion, and thus needed to make the Q1 mailing one that a printer printed/assembled. And so, I got the perfect object lined up—a long-brewing collaboration with Art of Play and a truly magical and weird beautiful paper thing. And then… the tariff nonsense hit and we were forced to press pause. (The good news is: we have since figured some stuff / will definitely release it to you all sometime later this year!)
For this very belated Q1, I’m instead honoring the fact that, current my brain has 100% Alphabet in Motion and I sending two fun letterform pop-ups your way! I’m also incorporating some feedback I’ve received from mail club subscribers. (About half of the people I’ve spoken with love when there is a construct-it-yourself element to the mailings. The other half of the people report experiencing an anxiety-attack when they’re asked to summon that level of hand/eye coordination.)
And so, I am sending one of each to appeal to both factions! Everyone will receive one pop-up from the book that is fully assembled and ready to enjoy, read, or hang on the wall. And for the puzzlers out there: everyone will also receive one pop-up from the book that will be a 3-dimensional mind-expanding riddle of a construction activity. :D (with instructions, but you are still guaranteed a challenge.)

These pop-up spreads contain an interactive explanation of some aspect of type design. Conveyor in Clifton New Jersey printed the pages for me, with astonishingly beautiful color, on their HP Indigo Press. I laser cut all of the pieces (5000 pieces for this mailing alone—>apologies if there is a bit of char!) and assembled the assembled half of your package.

Additionally, (to further apologize for this ridiculous delay) I’m adding a raffle element to this belated Q1 mailing.
Every 1 in 10 of you (chosen randomly) will receive a super-limited-edition advanced handmade-by-Kelli copy of Alphabet in Motion. It is handmade/extremely imperfect (each is a bit different), I printed every page of the accompanying essay booklet on the risograph myself, perfect-bound them myself, laser-cut and glued the popups. I only was able to get half of the pop-ups in there, but… it’s still pretty cool! (My only request: If you end up with one, please do send notice of any typos.)

Two invitations for IRL art things:
One more bonus this month is that I’m a part of two IRL exhibitions that you are invited to attend, if you happen to be in NYC or SF. Proper paper invitations will follow in your mailing (but those sometimes take forever to arrive, so…)
Brooklyn • June 14th 3pm-9pm • The Arm**
The paper engineering class I organized will be holding the final exhibition of their work. It was a great, lovely, and sharp group. We will have wine and cheese, and records. Come see what they made!
**The celebration is bittersweet, as Dan will be closing the Arm at the end of June. Very sad, as this has been my creative home for almost 2 decades. Friends of the Arm (like me) are organizing some last minute workshops to make the most of the remaining time. If you’re interested in workshops, I’ll be posting them here (so far, we have "RISO animation" and "Creative Protest Signs", but will be adding a "pop-up basics workshop" and a "RISO tunnelbooks" workshop soon.)

Brooklyn (July 11 from 7-9pm) and SF (August 8 from 7-9pm) • Peephole Cinema
Peephole Cinema, a 24/7 public art film screening series is coming back to Brooklyn (97 Wilson at Troutman) and to SF (280 Orange Alley in the Mission). Two artists are featured: Tala Schlossberg and ME. (The theme is "analog.") I’m developing a new RISO Animation piece for it. Tala and I both live in Brooklyn, but there is also an opening in SF if anyone needs something to do that night, it will be fun!

OK, thanks for being patient with me. Q2 coming very soon!
