On the way: September! ๐๏ธ ๐๏ธ
Added 2023-09-24 21:41:46 +0000 UTCSeptember's experiment is a foldable illusion wall hanging. Specifically, it is a wall hanging that winks as you walk by it (perennially approving of your outfit!)
One of the sheets will arrive folded, as a model for how to fold the others. The sheets are pre-scored and folding instructions are provided. In the spirit of offline activities, they are dispensed via a small booklet, containing step-by-step photographs. (if anyone finds they need a video, just reach out and I will provide one. :D ) In the end, you'll have three complementary wall pieces to mix and match.
This particular fold is called the Miura Ori tesellation. It translates literally to "Miura's basket-weave." The Miura referred to here is Kลryล Miura, the Japanese astrophysicist for whom the fold is named, as he created perhaps its most notable example: a collapsible satellite carrying an array of solar panels.
For those of you in NYC (or who may be visiting), iterations of this fold by Ruth Asawa are currently on view in her exhibition at the Whitney Museum. Structural paper was part of the curriculum at Black Mountain College, and became a lifelong part of her practice.
Happy folding and happy Fall, everyone,
Kelli
