but--debt and its original opposite, credit--have become endlessly abstracted & complicated since the introduction of "currency". so: while obviously i do not know you nor the details of the situation, i wouldn't be so hard on yourself about that $20 you & your musician peers passed around between each other. was that really an indicator of coldhearted transactionality? were you charging each other by the hour at market rates? or was it more accurately a ritual of recognising & furthering the value of each others' projects, through the only medium (money) that you'd been taught holds inherent value due to its alienability?

your conclusion in the last section is quite similar to the thesis of Graeber's "Debt: The First 5000 Years": the debt is the relationship. of the more visceral examples he gives is the debt between parent and child: if a child were to create a line-item invoice of the total cost of raising them, then tried to send that sum to their parents: that would more likely be seen as an attempt to completely excise the parents from their life, no? rather than as an act born of gratitude.

Great video, always enjoyed the english version as a kid so seeing this analysis and your interpretation of the changes between sub and dub was fascinating. Studio ghibli's "Totoro" was my very early introduction to anime but I have become staunchly anti anime in my later years. I still hold "trigun" and "initial d" close to my heart but I can't watch all of the cutesy stuff. It creeps me out for some reason. Obviously a personal issue and opinion, I try not to knock people for enjoying anime in general (my boyfriend watches trash like "my hero academia") but I do find myself side eyeing anime enjoyers. I guess a way to put it is that it feels like visual slop. Most- especially modern- anime is visual first with a story line second. A lot of the time that visual is a combination of cute and sexual, it makes me want to crawl out of my skin. "You should watch ______!!!" No, but i appreciate your passion, hypothetical responder
