Ep. 200 Premium - asking a doctor stupid questions [VIDEO]

Comments

Aiden always comes in clutch with the tax references like the papa tax he says as ludwig haha

Hbomb 621

im also autistic and i also befriended a lot of my english teachers, im glad me and slime are similar in this way

freya jameson

I also had a teacher call me retarded when I was misbehaving at the time and had pretty much the same reaction, and in the same way I mentioned it to my aunt who picked me up that day and she similarly freaked the fuck out same fucking reaction and teacher had to apologize which like I didn't care one way or another if this lame ass thought I was retarded because I was just having fun. Dead ass though, same year she won the "golden apple" award for like best teacher or something stupid, really makes you think about academics, chuzz really graduated high school and immediately went back to elementary to call me retarded.

Doobiten

I had a teacher that was nice to all the girls in high school. Always giving hugs and preferential treatment. The only reason I even cared was that he would let some girls out early for lunch and one time I left early and got in trouble. So I started asking everyone if they noticed how he hugged and treated the girls. I guess word started spreading and one day he pulls me out of class and asks me if I heard about the things being said about him and if I knew who started it. Not sure if he knew it was me but there definitely was some creepy vibes.

At the airport waiting for my delayed flight. I'm not flying to Boston... but the flight using this gate after us sure is. Start playing the episode and my ear buds are not playing the audio for some reason, so "BOSTON P.D., YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO KILL A KID" comes blaring out of my phone. Nightmare scenario

Troy Black

How Slime feels about Liam is exactly how I feel about Squeex. I just wanna watch him banter with chat while doing runs, none of this “content” please

If you think love on the spectrum is bad, in the UK there's a show called the Undateables, which pairs people with a variety of disabilities/conditions/injuries together to date

Matthew Wilkes

Is mango the house of melee

Logan Thompson

Nick talking about an old high school teacher fucking a student reminds me that in my HS there were about 5 teachers caught doing this, one that bought weed and sent nudes to my ex boyfriends best friend and her nudes passed around the school. A true shit show

escapist

Slime bringing out Soles as a joke is more indicative of how autism works than any other analysis discussed elsewhere in the episode

Andres Z

long time listener, first time comment guy. @nick from @theyard this is the best zombies mod i have ever seen brother https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSpbClfhHRE

AYOOOOOOO

To the point about professors dating students. I work in academia, and it’s kinda scary how common it is for professor to marry THEIR OWN phd students after working with them.

BrainCell

wait the story about slimes friend who had sex with the lunch lady is just like the movie Ma

Yv

No shot there’s another BCBA yardigan 😂

I've listened to all 400 episodes and I've literally run into Nick and Ludwig at socal climbing Gyms more than I have commented on any episodes (please release the chalk bucket one more time). Anyways, I have a masters in Applied Behavior and am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I've worked with individuals with ASD for almost 10 years. I'll try to answer some questions to my best ability. So first, off yes - overall I think the wide spectrum or sort of catch all for this diagnosis is a net positive. It was mentioned that it's sort of a foot in the door which is very true, but overall a good thing. Kids can actually be diagnosed with ASD as young as 2 years old and can start to receive early intervention which is a good starting point for individuals. Typically as they get older it is recommended that they get what's called a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation which can screen for any co-morbid diagnoses that are harder to detect at a younger age such as ADHD, BPD, any language disorders ect. Basically anything that could contribute to the core deficits of ASD (communication, socialization, elevated restrictive/repetitive patterns of behavior or in extreme cases destructive maladaptive behaviors). But the diagnosis is overall a net positive because they can start to receive services that can target the individual's specific deficits through early intervention and then once they turn five they can receive ABA therapy (Applied behavior analysis). They can also receive a diagnosis level, so it can be noted in the diagnostic reports ASD level 1, 2 or 3. The diagnosis CAN TECHNICALLY be dismissed later in life, but that is extremely extremely rare and really not worth anyone's time or money, and ultimately kinda fake. Because what would need to happen is the person would need to get another comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and basically not disclose the previous diagnosis THEN have whoever is diagnosing to determine there is no diagnosis. Another thing to consider is that when you get an IEP (individualized education plan) in high school, you can take those accommodations and apply them to college and by law they have to abide by them. If they go into the work force, employers can also use it as a reference to accommodate the individual's work environment. This can be things like extra breaks, oral testing vs. written, extra time on tasks ect. If you ask me, I would rather have the ability to call onto those accommodations if needed at that point in life than to "drop the diagnosis." Like I said earlier, it's kinda fake and for the most part it is just something that parents who don't just unconditionally love and accept their kids TRY to do, but at the end of the day it's probably still there... The individual just learned to cope and express their wants/needs in a socially "acceptable" way. As far as what causes ASD specifically there isn't a specific finding quite yet as to what causes it, but what was said in the episode by Dr Noodle Slam is generally accepted - for example I think he mentioned socio-economic status. This can be a big factor because what kids need to learn to speak is to be exposed to as many words as possible. If a kid is in a home where parents are available all the time and are talking to them in a functional way, the kid will pick that up. On the other hand if parents are always working and the kid is left to his own devices and maybe chooses to watch something less functionally educational or something with not as much dialogue (think of PBS kids vs. watching something with limited dialogue like samurai jack idk). I won't get into the other reasons he mentioned because this comment is already getting a bit lengthy. Personally I think love on the spectrum is a decent representation. I'm going to be honest I've never watched a full episode, I've only seen clips with subway surfer under. It's allowing autistic people to either 1 - feel represented and see that they can also pursue romance or 2 - allow them to be critical of the show because they don't express the same way, which is a normal thing in society. Also the latest season of Survivor also had an openly Autistic player who made top 3, which again is just good representation for the community to be able to look and say I can do that too. If I missed anything you really wanted answered just let me know, I can try to answer. Also sorry if anything was hard to understand, I'm typing this all on my phone.

Conrad D.

Wow the schools should organize two gatherings every year how stupid to suggest. Also, dumbest* and their*

Andrew Uddin

As a registered behavioral technician I also wonder how autism works

Devin Rodriguez

As an autistic person who is also a college teacher in communication theory, this episode was extremely hype for me. But I do feel like I need to disclaim now that I don't fuck my students (nor have heard of it in our college but idk for sure)

Demi R

I am a Behavior Analyst and have supported kids with Autism for 10 years. Its such a deep subject. The cause is still being studied because of how many different factors could be a cause but genetics are at the for front of being how you can predict someone having ASD. ASD is a social disorder which is so much deeper then it sounds but those deficits are so important in learning. This could mean a child does not imitate behaviors on their own like someone who does not have ASD. Though someone never stops having ASD (or should ever feel like they need to) those people can learn with practicing skills. I have been lucky to teach alot of kids these skills, even to the point of getting multiple non-verbal kids to learn to talk! The spectrum umbrella also being one large group also has a financial piece to it that people dont know about. Just like the Dr said, its a door to support but does not tell you exactly how each person is. When it became all one big thing (ASD, Aspergers, etc) then it let's providers and families get support through insurances that might not have been provided before. Its confusing but like everything else there is a money piece to it.

Felipe Ciriano

Hey this is great info! My brother is on the spectrum (high functioning) and this was insightful for me even after growing up with him. :) thank you for this!

Gabe

jimfanaccount sir please i beg for the hot take

I’m a social worker so I’ve studied diagnoses like autism!! So the reason there’s no like “autism gene” is because it’s a neurodevelopmental disorder. ADHD, for example, is also a neurodevelopmental disorder. It’s stuff that you’re just born with, like it’s just part of your cognitive abilities. Autism doesn’t just happen to you, you don’t contract it; you just *are* that way. There’s lots of research about the “why” of it all, like dr noodleslam said. It feels like a lot of guesswork and pseudoscience sometimes. idk much about all that because I’m in the business of treating behavioral issues, I’m not really on the research side. As for nicks question about “can it be unlearned”: kind of!! But also not really!! The concept of “masking” is pretty well known at this point, but for those who may not know, I’ll explain. People with ADHD and autism often have atypical social behaviors or traits that make them alienated from neurotypical people. Because of this perceived (and often real) isolation, they learn how to hide these behaviors or minimize them in favor of fitting in. Usually this isn’t consciously done — people sort of learn what they get bullied/judged for and then change it to stop the bullying, and a lot of this starts manifesting in childhood specifically. People with autism who stim (rocking, arm flapping, fidgeting, head banging, spinning, repeating phrases/words, etc) often learn to find more inconspicuous ways to stim because it’s less “socially acceptable” to start spinning in circles in the middle of class, for example. Or, in my own personal experience, I’ve learned to hide my overly literal interpretation of things by honing my skills of obsessively analyzing facial features, body language, and becoming hyper-aware of social cues to avoid being laughed at for “missing the joke”. It’s a mental effort I have to put in every time. It doesn’t come to me naturally. And even still, i really struggle to discern sarcasm from sincerity. In short, people with autism or ADHD often get shown all the ways their social skills and worldview differ from their peers, and they mold and contort themselves to fit into neurotypical social constraints to cope with this isolation. There’s also the whole conversation of the levels of support in autism (the newer, more inclusive term to replace “high/low functioning” because it’s problematic). Autistic people with high support needs (for example: those who are nonverbal, have extreme sensory issues… stuff that makes it much harder to navigate life unassisted) may have little to no masking depending on their cognitive and social abilities. Those who have lower support needs (this is what was previously referred to as “high functioning” — so people who don’t need as much support and thus are able to be more independent) may have much higher tendencies/abilities to mask, giving them the appearance of not even having autism. but in reality, they do have autism and they’re just really good at presenting the way they’re expected to present. There’s also a lot of interesting data about the difference between autism and gender — women are significantly less diagnosed than men because the symptoms of autism are all based on a study from the 50s or something on exclusively young boys. Also, girls are usually socialized in a way that pressures them into being more socially apt so they can adhere to gender roles, so they’re kind of trained to be good at masking from the jump. Because of this, girls are even harder to diagnose. Masking is incredibly draining, though. It’s a survival mechanism. It’s a way for neurodivergent people to systematically ignore their needs in favor of conforming to social pressures, and ignoring those needs/inclinations is extremely exhausting. So, there’s been a lot of movement in the community about unmasking and trying to find your “real self” again, because at some point you lose sight of where the mask starts and ends. Anyways, special interest infodump over lol

I think Ludwig genuinely contributes to the eps he's in but the premo's without him tend to go deeper into exploring ideas in a way I really like

f0x

possibly the most autistic way to describe autism

damianyeah

From what I've witnessed autism is more like getting born into an elden ring class that specs your various traits and sensitivities and powers. Your interests are the items you find along the way. You find one cool ass scythe and you're like damn I want everything similar to this and/or everything about it. Hell yeah I love sonic. Green hill zone

Dr noodleslam should absolutely be on the podcast! Loved his portion, he was great!

Y'all gotta get someone interested in philosophy of science or medicine on the pod. Slime just jumps right to the heart of some of the issues that science hasn't answered yet. Philosophy is often the first approach to those kinds of problems. It would lead to some dope convos

Mac Taylor

Fanum tax the pussy had me on the floor genuinely one of the best bits. Was gonna blather about the idea of neurodivergence being a construct born out of a capitalist society but if you get it you get it

JimFanAccount

On doctors who sometimes care but don’t: I have friends at a medical school that is extremely toxic and doesn’t really care about its students other than producing good board scores to inflate its stats. I think there’s a subsection of doctors who made it through the grind stone of years of medicinal general trauma who are just jaded. Some don’t match into their specialty and have to settle for something like general practitioning. Then there are doctors like my PCP who wanted to do orthopedic surgery but valued the human aspect of medicine more so he settled for the much lower paying family med. he’s the kind of doctor who patients rave about because he is genuinely interested in his work and passionate about it. That kind of thing is extremely hard to come by nowadays in healthcare.

Nick Santana

have the boys watched the rehearsal s2 because i feel like aiden would love it it’s about flying planes

Josephine Filey

i agree with you but i see it like as a jjba stand chart

vaughn

Probably not a serious question but as someone diagnosed with autism, its not exactly a linear spectrum, you can think about it more like a radial chart. Some people have more issues with sensory things, social issues, things like that etc. So its not like "more autistic vs less autistic" its like "autistic in these ways". Functionally what autism "is" is a difference in brain structure and how your brain makes links to things. Its fundamentally a different way of thinking and how you come to conclusions. This can manifest itself in many ways. Take all this with a grain of salt as this is just what comes from my doctor and the reading I've done

notacoconut

One of my college professors is currently married to a former student. Which sounds not super terrible except one of the other professors in the same area of study is his ex wife since he cheated on her with the student

Listening to Slime talk about when his Mom was the angriest she ever got with him. I think it sucks that kids/teenagers just lack the vocabulary, composure, and confidence to speak their words in those situations. Also having the time window to do so by the adult, but you get what I mean hopefully. There's plenty of memories of being in trouble with my parents and I just remember thinking what I would've said if I could, or what I could've said later after thinking about it. It's so frustrating at the moment in time.

KevinsLunchbox

bit at the end has to make the end of year compilation holy shit

40:21 I have a rare and poorly understood [but ultimately not life-ending] neurological disorder--among a slew of other health issues that I also don't have answers to. I've been saying for years that my ideal doctor is someone who "wants to study me like a bug." First time I've ever heard anyone echo the same type of sentiment. Why yes, doctor, I WOULD like to be the puzzle of your fascination 💃🕺 🧄.

Rbt vouch for this right here! Often times there are things most people don’t think about having to pay for (such as talking; an AAC device can be thousands) & the diagnosis is needed to get coverage from school/insurance.

TLDR: the term ASD or autism works as an umbrella term to help get folks with differing needs government/local supports they need to live a more comfortable life and hopefully thrive! Without the label they might not qualify for needed supports bc insurance 😐 However it’s important to remember that a label like ASD doesn’t tell a persons whole story. To add a note to Slimes question of why do we use the umbrella term autism or ASD; on the care worker and support side, it is a helpful term for folks who are diagnosed to get supports and accessibility needs met where ever they go (hopeful at a lower/no cost to the person/family!) AWithout certain labels, unfortunately, people who have diverse needs would not be able to use certain government or support agency resources due to not having the ‘right label’ or only being able to receive insurance covered care if they have a certain diagnosis. This concept applies to many disabilities, especially internal or less immediately ‘visible’ ones. These supports can look like many things! For the kids I have worked with it can be communication supports like talking tablets for non verbal students, specialized learning tools for home, personal care assistants (PCA) outside of school, medications for co-morbidities that help manage symptoms, and so much more like smaller but still important things like more accessible clothing! Having said that, these labels are really only helpful for, like Dr. noodle man said, getting a baseline understanding of a persons condition. A label doesn’t tell a persons whole story! I could say so much more about this but I hope this helps give a perspective, everything I’ve learned is from on the job experience and training, not schooling, so if anyone knows more and I’m wrong please correct me! Sorry if my wording could’ve been more eloquent. (Repost from the audio ep for the vid watchers 👍) 💗 from a PCA/paraprofessional yardigan, congrats on ep200!
