The AI section was so hard to get through

Particle Penguin

I don’t agree with Aiden’s merch company defense for AI. It’s not just offloading your work, it’s trusting the people who you offload to. That’s why I’m sure they have experienced professionals working in their merch company. If you want to relate it to AI, it’s more like hiring some guy who has a vague understanding of how to make clothes, and being proud of the worst tshirt you’ve ever seen when it gets shit out on your desk.

marcusa

did Nick do track? bro was running laps with that goalpost

The ai section made me wanna blow my shit off

I can confirm about Target employees working at Starbucks. I worked there with my fiance, and despite her not applying for Starbucks at all and voicing she did not want to be involved with it, they made her train there and would pull her out of the grocery department when Starbucks was understaffed.

Andrew

This was a fantastic episode. I think the discussion was genuinely my second favorite in yard history right behind Nick talking about creating console prosim mods for cod4. Love every second of it

Wyatt Page

I think the thing missed in the conversation about AI in both this podcast and DougDoug's positive outlook about AI is what functionally is happening. Because if the idea is that AI reduces barriers to entry I would say that it broadly is the worst solution for reducing barriers of entry. The barriers to making art are three factors, one is cost, two is time, three is ability. AI does not improve your ability fundamentally it does not teach you how to draw or write better that can't just be found in a free online tutorial. AI costs money if you want ChatGPT pro it costs $200 a month which is more expensive than almost any singular creative tool. When it comes to time that is the only field AI is helpful because if you don't have the time to write or draw it can do it for you. So when I think about AI and that it's main value is reduction of time I can only see the cynical parts of it.

Puddin

The sentiment about the target Starbucks is real. I once made the mistake of getting coffee at the target Starbucks in Augusta Maine and there was one person working the location and they had a sink full of dirty dishes… and it had attracted fruit flies. There were visible clouds of bugs to the point where it looked like the pestilence had arrived in that Starbucks. It was haunting and I didn’t see it until after I had paid for my drink

Wyatt Page

Also by not accepting credit cards they don't need to pay credit card company fees which cut into their profit 😉

Alex Spadaro

I really love WinCo, I’m so sad Nick is spreading this slander on my favorite store with the biggest savings

Mars Munie

I'm upset I paid $1.25 for this.

Will

With the comparison between the 30k hours guy and AI, the potential of the 30k guy using AI is what most interests me. Saving time on tedious parts, etc

the people who created the AlphaGo model turned around and applied the same fundamentals they learned through the profess to developing a protein folding model that just won the Nobel Prize, AlphaFold

Angus Johnson

I was gonna retort but Aidan hit a lot of my exact points against nicks idea. I think he has valid feelings about the inhumanity of ai, but chose the wrong focal point

Spencer Dobson

Meta AI cannot create an image of a “Yankee wit No Brim”. The only idea of a Yankee’s hat it has is with a brim.

toby

TRAGIC: three liberal creatives almost discover the concept and consequences of automation under capitalism and why it mandates socialism but don't quite get there

ChairMaster

I honestly really enjoy when they have a genuine conversation about something important/serious. It’s not as funny but I am so interested.

Mattcanthearyou

once there’s an “AI” that can without-a-doubt prove that their data was ethically sourced and will not further push racist, misogynistic, and homophobic viewpoints/biases? i’ll be all for vibe-coding or “making art with AI”. but until then, ppl should just get on stack overflow with the rest of us 😅 like its not thaaaaat hard

As a guy who used to work in Pomona, WinCo Foods is fantastic. And yes, they only accept Debit Cards/Cash.

JT Rebel

Artificial Intelligence does not pose an existential threat to the young college graduate, modern capitalism does. You don't need to worry about some amateur with a chatbot out performing you with their clever prompting and soulless grammarly editor. If you both apply for the same job, I feel good about your odds. You are smart. You are human. Your passion outweighs any manufactured prose from your opposition. I am not worried about the prompter, I am worried about the executive, or room full of shareholders who believe they can save a few bones by attempting to do with an AI what you can do with your hands. You will be one wage they will never have to worry about paying. The AI isn't “stealing” or “taking” your job. Why would it? It doesn't want your tasks. It isn't getting paid. It doesn't need to feed itself or keep a roof over it’s head. You are getting cut from the system by greedy executives who discount the humanity of your work. AI is just a tool. A key can’t ruin your car’s paint unless your ex girlfriend gives it the power to. The more we rage about AI as some agent in our current and future struggles, the less we allow ourselves to think about the real problem–the people at the top of the ladder who will do anything to keep their pockets full of bones. Fuck em. Don’t use AI.

Xan

I listen to this podcast at my cubicle at my software engineering job, specifically to not think about CS/AI/ML T-T

This is the most ‘Bro we should start a podcast’ episode of the yard

Dan Clarke

I'm going to school to become an educator and I've been taking a class that has been talking about the use of AI in school settings, and it's really as scary thing for school settings. I get Aiden saying that AI is this useful thing, which I tend to agree with, but it's ramifications are a lot greater than I think people realize. Students using AI is going to make a dumber population. There won't be any real learning happening on the student's part when the AI is doing the work for the students. I think the issue is that AI is being utilized as a worker rather than a tool for workers.

Gino Marchionda

back to back, stretched out, touch butts and feet sometimes. Best way to cuddle.

Carly Lane

Yo they’re not lying about WinCo - I get my meat and produce somewhere else but AT LEAST 90% of the same exact products you’ll find at target, Walmart, etc… are significantly cheaper at WinCo

Anthony Kolton

Back to back bum touch sleeping with ur gf is goat shit

Mon

i think both are true, the skill is definitely not there but ive yet to see any ai art that accomplishes something a rough sketch from a shit artist wouldnt. prompt “artists”have the ability to create any art in any style they please yet they just make the same sci fi slop and anime girl bullshit

joe

I do all my grocery shopping at Winco. Yeah. No credit cards. I just like it because they're still 24/7 in a post covid world so I do my shopping at the early hours of the morning. It's nice. The only problem is when you get stuck behind people trying to food stamps scam the cashier. I'm not saying food stamps users are bad. But the people who purposely try to get more than what they have in food stamps, and then try to get the cashier to give it to them anyways, and when told to put something back they put back normal food because they really really want to keep their 6 bottles of Pepsi and 4 bags of doritos. Fuck those guys.

KevinsLunchbox

Nick you are entirely correct about target Starbucks, they don’t get trained by Starbucks they’re trained by Target. Neither of which make for a good barista but it’s levels

Zach

I hate ai art but I’d argue people are not lacking in creativity but lacking in skill when they use generative ai.

Chives

Im a big pet peeve guy for sure

Lewis Graver

i also get irrationally annoyed by things that don’t matter or have any bearing on my actual life

Keegan

slime is right, butt to butt is like the best way to fall asleep

I work in Machine Learning, not trying to make any blanket statements, and I don’t know anything about Go, but if I understand correctly, I agree with an aspect of what Nick is saying. There are aspects of creativity and human ingenuity that has not been created or mimicked by AI and while LLMs and GPT has become increasingly more impressive its always an interpolation of the data it’s been given, and never an extrapolation. You can imagine something like a style transfer, where we take a picture of the eiffel tower and have ai recreate it in the style of vincent van gogh, and we go woah I’ve never seen that before. Its still an interpolation of data its been fed and we’ve been able to consume. Everything about the image is aspects of things that have existed. AI is still not making anything NEW.

James

Ryan I always thought you were a big stupid chungus

Yuri

Nick is correct about the Target Starbucks not hiring baristas. The people working at the Starbucks are just Target employees that get assigned to the Starbucks for their shift.

In Switzerland all the beds have the thingy where you can raise the back it's pretty cool

Why do the episodes say “Season 2: Episode 190” what is the point of having that above the episode number if it doesn’t even state the number episode in the season?

Lewis Graver

This is a lemonade stand ass ep.

Jojothejman

I'm new to the meta-analysis of the yard but i feel like nick code switches a lot. With Alex it makes sense because he's from the dirty south

Barneycles

When openai beat OG in dota 2 it had to be making inferences right? There's no way it's seen those exact scenarios before, it has to be drawing on similar scenarios of the past and making a cal.

Shrapnel

I’m a 3D modeler, and a life long artist, and my feelings on ai are immediate disgust. But, there’s a caveat to that. What I find fundamentally wrong with ai is the idea of using it to create/generate things. The reason being is that ai is not real artificial intelligence, it is a far more complex version of the algorithms we’ve already had for years. True ai assumes that it has an awareness of self and innate understanding of the world around it. I get frustrated because so many people focus on what you can “generate” with ai, rather than how ai can be used to assist you in the creative process. For example, in motion capture, you often have to clean up the animations because there is a lot of fuzz and inaccuracies. It would be really cool to use ai to help with the clean up process so that you could spend more time actually capturing the actors rather than fixing the animation. I think it can be a great tool, but it can never be an artist. The truly terrifying aspect of ai is not it’s existence, but it’s existence under capitalism and the avenues for more exploitation and cutting of human labor

Saltine

dougdoug and atrioc sound a little different in this ep of lemonade stand

BrandedBow

i didn’t realize ludwig wasn’t in this until 36 minutes in

Cashton Culpepper

Target employee here- We refer to Target Starbucks as Tarbucks to reflect the feeling we have there. Also, our baristas are technically “Food and Beverage” employees that are usually cross trained to stock shelves and produce in grocery. Some of them are cross trained in other areas, but they are all Target employees first. Their leadership is usually the leader for all of grocery.

Skye Scooter

that is awesome, congrats to your mom!

Vinh Tran

I will check it out the jiggling dick butt

Vinh Tran

every single artist that professionally makes music today uses some sort of pitch correction software when making music. they don't use it to "pretend to have perfect pitch" (cause perfect pitch isn't just "when you can hit the right notes"), they use it because it significantly speeds up the music production process. instead of having to do, say, 100 takes of a song in order to get it as perfect as it can be in one take, now artists will do 10 or 20 takes, merge together all the best parts, and then use a pitch correction software like melodyne to fix any minor fuck ups. no one is using it to fake singing skills, except for people doing it as a bit. tom scott did a really good video on this like 5 years ago, I'd really recommend it

je suis fudgeman

also the reason wincos so cheap is because they have a lower flat markup than wallys/freddys/kroger

jay gaboriault

fun fact winco is a co op and my mom retired a millionaire working as a receiver there for 25 years

jay gaboriault

Father Boots

target Starbucks definitely sucks the ingredients are ordered by target and just come through mixed with normal frozen food and ice cream. target is a corrupt place and it does not help the Starbucks at all

Anyore

If anyone is interested in the ai art conversation I highly recommend an anime called Carole and Tuesday. It's a show that centres around 2 people in an American idol style television series who are the only ones who don't use AI to create the music they play, it also has undercurrent themes of racism and Stan culture but it gives a really in depth look at what they were talking about where if AI becomes the normal medium for art. Well worth the watch

TheJigglingDB

Only humans can truly create Legend of Zelda mixed with Sonic, that's why Sonic Frontiers exists, and it's brilliant. Buggy but brilliant.

bobbydylan

Aiden please I just got home from my mortgage accounting job. Why did you bring this up?

Austin

Even as an artist, I have spent years trying to learn to draw so I can express my ideas but no matter how hard I try I still just suck at it. So I completely understand AI as a tool to open up creativity to more people without commissioning artists for hundreds/thousands of dollars, even though that is ethically questionable. But ONLY for personal use. Unfortunately with the way existing AI models have been trained even the above idea is unethical, because they are built from the stolen material of millions of artists without payment or even permission. Then you have the additional layer of the insane environmental impact of AI so I just avoid it all together, even though the desire to see my stories and characters brought to life is so tempting.

Hannah

Generative AI is fundamentally different from the idea of a human mind level AI. There exists no amount of tweaking you can do to current AI models and way of thinking that could ever get to a true human mind style AI. If we could develop that, we would have, but we can't. Its so much easier to just have generative AI, its astronomically harder to program a human brain replicating AI. We are a LONG ways off from that happening. I don't think we're even making progress.

Daddywarbucks

Nick: *stretches* “man, I’m getting tired, better get to bed” *presses down button* bed: eeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Nick: “ahh, that’s better”

LifeOfBaker

This was a refreshing discussion about AI applications in art. Since the bubble has started inflating, I have been more inspired than ever to work on personal things I care about. Retaliatory human spirit shit

Vinh Tran

AI is ruining the internet. Its not worth.

Colton Z

Very thought provoking ep. Also the the Starbucks in Targets arent considered real Starbucks locations

Jonah Terry

ai as a tool for non creative people to be able to convey their ideas sounds cool on paper but the venn diagram of those guys and the ai game ad guy is a circle. the lack of respect for the process to me is the same as just viewing art as a medium to pump ads

joe

The selection on some of those in-store stores sucks

Daddywarbucks

I'm curious if the go manga that aiden mentioned is Hikaru No Go or a different one
