The publishing side of any graphic novel is honestly where the hard work starts. Writing and drawing pages isn’t a true selling point for readers. The business side for indie creators is a rough terrain because manga is a commodity product . Because of this audience building through readership like the Japanese do, must precede volume sells. In other words we must warm up, cold leads through lead magnets. i.e free or cheap chapters like in their anthology. Also anime are free or cheap to stream. This approach builds fandom through readership and viewership leading down funnel to a volume sells.
