I made a whopping $113.99 in sales in 2019. Above is a screen shot of my totals for the year, courtesy of the online comic shop, drivethrucomics.com.
I didn't actually make any comics in 2019, by the way. The last book I made, Blonde Marvel #1, was made at the tail end of 2018 and offered for sale the following March. So if I had followed up Blonde Marvel #1 with another project, oh, something like a "Blonde Marvel #2", then presumably I would have made a little more money. Also I presumably could have made far more sales if Drive-Thru didn't have that asinine policy where they hide adult comics from their own customers. It's unknown how much money I've lost because they don't want you, dear reader, accidentally stumbling across nudity.
I did make some money over at Comix Central but sadly they went out of business last year and I don't have any stats.
What kills me about Drive-Thru is that they do their damnedest to keep customers from discovering my comics, but they sure don't mind taking a huge percentage when, despite all odds, I do make a sale.
You may have noticed that Drive Thru took a substantial amount of my gross sales. And you may be asking, Darrell, why don't you just sell your product at your own website, and cut out the middle man. The answer is, because PayPal. PayPal is the leading payment processor and the payment method most folks will want to use to buy digital content. Unfortunately, PayPal has a rule against selling digital adult content, and they will seize your assets if they find out what you're up to. In fact, I can't even put a PayPal button on my website if there's ANY nudity on that page. I once got into it with them for that.
2019 was a busy year for me and making comics was, sadly, not a priority. I had to graduate, then find work, then find a new place, then move family and furniture from my old place to my new place. Much as I love making art, comics, and so on, focusing on art when I should have been focusing on real life stuff has hurt me in the past and I was determined not to let that happen in 2019. I was able to do a few sketches and even some illustrations now and then but not as many as I'd have liked to. Hopefully, I'll get to make a lot more art in 2020.
