JULY 15TH | 10:33
Essentially, you had nowhere to be this morning.
Not when Jeongguk didn’t have Any current schedules at Bangtan, not when you didn’t feel like stepping a foot outside unless it was time to get ready for your shift tonight. All you wanted to do was sleep in, maybe order some lunch at some point.
But Jeongguk clearly had a different idea in mind, at least based on the sounds you could hear on the outside of the bedroom. It made you wonder if the boy was always that active in the mornings and you just didn't hear it with how distant everything was in your own house, or if Guk finally felt at ease from being in his own space.
Despite your lazy cuddles being canceled, you had a small smile on your lips as you got out of bed to slip into the bathroom to follow your morning routine. Your legs were a little sore after last night, as if you'd been to the gym recently, and your private parts were… Aching a little.
Nothing that would bother you too much, just a reminder that Guk fucked you that good.
When you walked out of the bedroom, teeth brushed and hair in a wonky ponytail, you immediately saw the cause for all the ruckus.
Your boyfriend was cooking in the small kitchen, shirt still off, back showing you the marks you left on his skin. His phone was on top of the counter, playing some kpop girl group song on a lower volume as he sang along.
If you waited a little more he might as well join the chorus with a choreography. But your giggle gave you away.
“Someone woke up in a good mood.” you pointed out as Jeongguk looked over his shoulder to notice you.
“After seven times last night?” he gushed, turning around to fully face you. Oh, yeah, his chest had a few fresh lines as well. “Didn’t you?”
“Damn, was it really seven?” you walked closer to peck him on the lips for a good morning.
“You didn’t count?” he laughed, turning off the stove before the scrambled eggs burned.
“Well, after the fifth, I kinda lost the ability to think logically.” you mumbled, a little embarrassed. And then you were looking around the counter: “When did you have time to go grocery shopping?”
“I didn’t, really.” Jeongguk shook his head, reaching for the two pieces of bread he had already toasted. “Jimin hyung brought this.”
“Jimin was here?”
“He texted me this morning to know how we’re doing.” the boy added with a shrug while splitting the scrambled eggs into two portions. “So I told him my address and that he could come over if he wanted, so he just showed up to drop this off.”
“I’m sure he raided Yoongi’s pantry.” you chuckled, but Jimin's nice gesture warmed your heart. As you picked a small empty space of the counter to climb and sit down, you asked: “Did he say anything about Namjoon?”
“Hyung stayed over at theirs last night.” Jeongguk answered right away and you had a guess that your brother would still stay at his friend's place for a while. Your brother had the tendency to run away from his problems, but you weren’t exactly one to talk. “Jimin-ssi said he wouldn’t tell anyone that you’re here with me. Said something about letting Joon suffer the consequences of his actions a little longer.”
“Good. I don’t think oppa would come here to drag me out, but I really don’t want to have to deal with him right now.” you sighed. As if sensing your distress, Jeongguk walked closer to you and left the breakfast forgotten for the time being. “It’s about time he realizes I'm a grown woman who can make her own decisions.”
“And I’m all for that, baby.”his smile was small, but sincere.
“What about you, though?” you parted your legs for Jeongguk to slot his hips in between them just for the sake of being close. “I know you were afraid of this happening.”
“I was afraid of losing you.” he corrected, hands resting on the sides of your hips. “I knew that making hyung mad was a possibility, so now we’ll deal with it. But I think we all need time, so I’m not going to try and talk to him before things calm down.”
“That’s smart.” you nodded, touching his shoulder to trace that tiny scar that wasn't a result of your nails. “But you’ll still try, right? I wouldn’t like your friendship to be over because of this.”
“Yeah. I’ll try to talk to him again, when the time is right.” and that was enough for now.
With a new thought, you asked: “What about the tattoo shop?”
“Jin hyung texted, too. Said he’ll try to work out a schedule so Namjoon and I don’t have clients on the same day.” Guk looked a little upset but was trying to not let it show. “He doesn’t want to let any of us quit.”
“That’s good.”
“I also texted Hatter.” he started, avoiding your eyes. “Said we might not make it there tonight.”
“Why wouldn't we go?” you hardened, but tried not to.
“Baby–”
“If you want to stay home, you’re welcome to, but I’m going.” you tried pushing off of the counter, but Guk stopped you. He wouldn’t let you walk away from him and you were thankful for that. “I’m going to find out what Jennie said to my brother.”
:She told him we’re together. We know that.” he tried to reason.
“And that’s enough reason for me to confront her about it.” you insisted, crossing your arms. “I’m not going to do anything crazy, but she’s been pestering me since she first saw us together. She can’t keep acting like she’s queen bee and it’s about time someone puts her in her place.”
“Wait, has she done anything to you?” Jeongguk’s eyebrows raised, eyes worried.
“She made my life working in the circle a lot harder than it needed to be,” you admitted that much, but not defeat. “Especially at the very start.”
“Dove, why didn't you tell me?”
“Because getting a rise out of me is what she wanted.” you huffed, clearly annoyed and easily on edge. “And I wasn’t about to fall into her trap like that, but this time she went too far.”
Jeongguk didn’t need to think it through any further. “Okay, yeah. We’ll go tonight.”
“Thank you.” you uncrossed your arms, giving in and holding his shoulders. “Can you teach me how to punch?”
He laughed hard, which made a reluctant smile spread on your lips.
“You don’t mean that.” he shook his head, knowing you too well.
“I don't.” you shrugged. “But you never know, she might deserve it.”
JULY 15TH | 22:04
“We're both going to go in and assess the situation.”
Jeongguk was sitting behind the wheel of his parked car, both of you already had your seatbelts off and you were ready to go. But your boyfriend had other worries as to how you would react when you saw Jennie again.
Even now, sitting in the private parking lot that everyone in the Circle used, your blood was boiling. You weren’t a violent person whatsoever, you hated anything from physical fights to yelling altercations. You always tried to solve any issues or misunderstandings with a conversation.
But Jennie lost that perk as soon as she thought it was a good idea to mess with your brother. Pestering you like a spoiled child that lost their favorite toy, teasing you for your mistakes and hiding your accessories and makeup so you'd be late for work, was one thing.
But meddling into your life outside of the Circle? Messing with your family when she didn't even know how deep your issues went? That was a whole new level of pettiness, one you would not stand behind.
“You’re welcome to stay here and wait for me.” was your reply as you reached For the car door handle to push the heavy door open.
“For fucks sake, dove–” Jeongguk was following out after you, reaching you so fast that you were barely any steps away from the vintage blue vehicle. “Can you wait a second?”
“I'm trying to solve this before the shift starts.” your words sounded like a whine, but Jeongguk stepped in front of you and held you by the shoulders.
“And I'm trying to look after you.” he argued and you could see the worry flashing in his eyes.
“Guk, I need to do this. I need to show her that what she did was messed up.” you gently took his hands off your shoulders so he wouldn't hold you back, but you linked your fingers together. “So you can either back me up or stay out of this.”
“I always have your back.” the man assured you, a little offended that you might think otherwise. “Okay, fine. But if it escalates, I'm dragging you out myself.”
That was enough of a compromise for you for now.
As you walked out of the parking lot, you rehearsed in your mind what you would say to the woman to try and get into her head that what she did was fucked up. You didn’t think she would ever admit or even care about it herself that she was wrong for doing what she did, but at least you would get it out of your chest.
Instead of crossing the block to get to the stage door on the other side, you decided to take the patrons’ entrance and go through the laundry place instead. It was still too early in the night for the hidden passageway to be used by clients right now, so you only ran into old ladies and tired mothers who were actually there to wash their clothes.
Taking the shortcut paid off, much to Jeongguk’s vexation. As soon as you were stepping into the main floor of the circle, you found your target.
Some of the bigger guys were placing boxes of alcohol bottles near the bar; today was probably restock day, but you didn’t even think to check the calendar to make sure. Hwasa and Hatter were near the railings in the middle, checking papers and talking to each other to make sure everything they ordered had been delivered correctly. Lisa and Chaeyoung were behind the bar checking which bottles could still be used and which were too low on content to be kept around.
And then there was Jennie. Perched on top of the bar counter, filing her nails and giving orders as to where Woozi should move the boxes to. Acting like she owned the place.
“What the fuck did you say to him?” were the first words to come out of your mouth, before people even noticed your arrival. You were charging towards the woman, despite Jeongguk’s hold, demanding: “What the fuck did you say to my brother?!”
Jennie didn’t even flinch, raising an eyebrow as she looked at you as if she was bored. “Would you stop yelling in my face?”
At that moment you were even more sure that she knew what she did. And she didn't just not care about it, but Jennie looked pretty proud of herself, snickering in your direction with a little laugh.
“Oh, I’m about to do a lot worse than that to your face.” you launched again, but Jeongguk circled your waist with strong arms.
“Wow wow wow–” Hatter stepped in to stand between you and Jennie, raising both hands as if to create a barrier between you and the girl. “If you want to fight, we can have a special girl on girl night and bring this to the ring.”
“I’m betting on Dove.” Woozi was still near the bar, chuckling as he and everyone else around you watched the scene unfold.
“Please, I’m not wasting my nails on her, they are expensive you know.” Jennie rolled her eyes and stepped down from the bar top with an annoyingly elegant jump.
She rounded Hatter so she could face you with one hand on her hip and her nose held high. Jeongguk’s arms around your waist loosened as you stopped fighting his hold, but he stood tall next to you, ready to step in and protect you as needed.
“Aren’t you going to answer me?” you kept pushing, heart thundering in your chest. “Or you’re just brave when no one else is around, huh?”
That seemed to get a reaction out of her, one that she masked by rolling her eyes as she pushed the nail filler into the back pocket of her tight pants.
No one else was working or organizing the delivery anymore, all eyes turned curiously to you and Jennie. Hatter stood out of the way, with his back against the bar so he could watch the scene develop. It was clear no one really knew what this was about, but everyone could pick up on clues and cues.
“I just told him the truth.” Jennie shrugged, crossing her arms. “I told him Jeongguk is using you behind his best friend’s back.”
“You should mind your own damn business for once in your life.” Jeongguk was the one to warn her, which made her gasp. “I've had enough of your fucked up games, get over yourself.”
Jennie had the audacity to act hurt. As if getting chastised by you didn’t mean anything to her, but the moment Jeongguk was turning on her, she was shocked.
But her ‘good girl’ facade was crumbling around her. And when her eyes aimed at you again, you saw venom.
“And I might have shown big bro a picture of your Jeongguk feeding you a pill.” Jennie stated, making your stomach drop and Jeongguk freeze beside you. A small wave of murmurs started going on around you and the woman looked appreciative of all the attention. “Do you remember that? At Mingyu’s party?”
Of course you remembered that, it was the only damn time you and Jeongguk had ever done anything like that together. Back then you were still trying to impress him, in a way, prove to him that there was more to you than what he knew. You wanted to show him and his friends that you had what it takes to be a part of this world.
It was foolish, but you had fun and you desperately needed to relax and get out of your head that night, so you never regretted it. Well, not until now at least.
Not when you knew what Namjoon must've thought –assuming Jennie was telling the truth– when he saw Jeongguk feeding you a pill. The way it must have triggered him into seeing Hyejin instead of you, of feeling like you were following the same path as her and would end up the same way.
Jeongguk was already realizing the same things as well, based on the absolutely heartbroken look on his face.
“You fucking bitch–”
“I’m just very concerned for your well being, Dove. Especially when that just keeps happening and happening…” Jennie kept going, proudly spilling all of her lies. She was so happy to tell you everything she had told Namjoon that it made you sick to your stomach. “Your brother was so worried when he heard I had to call the paramedics. Overdosing is just so dangerous in our age–”
You've heard enough.
Her words had you surging at her, hands ready to grab whatever you could. But Jeongguk was still stronger and faster, holding you back as your eyes burned with tears and you desperately tried to squirm out of his hold.
“Let me go!” you screamed, seeing red when Jennie just stood there and laughed. “Let me go, I’m going to fucking kill her!”
“You sound just like your brother.” she stated and that broke you. “Both rotten apples, I guess.”
You weren’t strong enough to move past Jeongguk and, honestly, the realization that you did look like Namjoon right now, felt like a slap in the face. It made you falter, anger crumbling down into something ugly. Into shame.
Jeongguk held you harder and cradled you into his chest as your knees weakened, the only thing keeping you from falling to the floor. A gentle sob rocked through you as you held onto the man for dear life.
“Jennie, that's enough.” Hwasa stepped in, having watched and heard all she needed to. “Leave.”
“Why do I have to leave?” Jennie turned to the other woman, pointing at you with a childish tantrum. “She’s the crazy one.”
“You are not listening to me.” Hwasa looked disgusted, jaw locked. “You’re fired.”
“What?! You can’t fire me over this!” Jennie shrieked, looking back to Lisa and Chaeyoung as if expecting them to defend her, but they were staring at the floor. “I’m your best girl!”
“You might be good at your job, but you’re not loyal. Look at what you did to Dove. To Jeongguk?” the older woman continued and you could hear a pin drop as everyone stayed quiet. “This doesn’t roll here. If you’re not loyal you’re not part of the family.”
Through bleary eyes you could see people around you start to nod and agree with what Hwasa was saying. Hatter took an almost imperceptible step to stand closer to you and Jeongguk. Everyone was turning against Jennie and despite the crumbling of your heart, you felt supported.
“I can’t believe you’re taking her side in this.” Jennie complained, stomping a foot on the ground. “No, I’m not gonna leave.”
Wordlessly, Hwasa sent a look to one of the fighters; Seung-cheol, you noted. The man had bright red hair currently, and strong arms that he flexed when walking towards Jennie.
The woman tried to argue and squeal as she was held by the arm and nudged in the direction of the backstage entrance.
You didn’t feel satisfaction in watching her being kicked out of the Circle, her complaints and curses weren't making you any happier. You knew she was getting what she deserved, some kind of heavenly justice being made, but none of that quieted the hurt in your chest.
None of that changed the fact that Namjoon had been fed a lie, one that was so exaggerated that it shouldn't have been believable in the first place. You hated how scared and hurt your brother must've been, but you hated just as much that he didn’t give you a chance to prove them wrong.
“Please let me get you home.” Jeongguk was still holding you against his chest, as if you were the most precious and delicate thing in his life.
“I have to work–” you argued, wiping your eyes forcefully.
“Take the night off, the two of you.” Hatter spoke, still watching you and Guk.
“I can't, you're already one girl down.” you didn’t want to let them down, and you didn’t want Lisa and Chaeyoung to resent you for the firing of their friend.
“We can handle it, I promise.” Lisa offered you a small, but honest smile.
“I'll ask Solar to step in tonight. She used to work at the bar before ” Hwasa assured you. “Go home and rest and we'll see you back on monday.”
JULY 15TH | 23:15
Not many things in life would be able to lift your spirits right now, but Jeongguk was willing to try. And apparently it started with fried chicken and beer and a promise to binge watch your favorite drama over the weekend.
Lucky for him, that same drama involved his favorite singer/actress, so you were positive you could hook him up to Scarlet Heart Ryeo in no time.
As your boyfriend parked his car in the first empty spot he found on the small parking lot of his short apartment building, you tried to balance all of the takeout bags you just picked up from his favorite restaurant.
“Is that Yoongi hyung?” Jeongguk was leaning closer to the steering wheel of the car to try and look further ahead.
Your stomach did a little turn and you were starting to lose your hunger at the thought of your boyfriend being here, too. But you could only see Yoongi leaning against the building, looking around as if waiting for someone to show up. And the man might be your brother’s right hand man, but he was also your friend and Jeongguk’s mentor.
“Did you know he was coming?” you asked after confirming that it was Yoongi indeed.
“Not at all.”
Jeongguk turned the engine off but only made a move to step out when you showed him that you were comfortable enough to do the same. And you only did so because you knew Yoongi was not the confrontational kind. He might have a sharp tongue and be brutally honest when his opinion was requested, but if he was here tonight it was to check up on you and not to yell at you some more.
You met your boyfriend on the sidewalk and Jeongguk got the takeout bags from you while balancing the pack of convenience store bought beers, letting you lead the way to the entrance of the building.
“There you are, I though I'd be here all night.” Yoongi pushed off the wall when he saw you, a little tired scoff that made you miss him.
He would have been, too, if you had stayed at the Circle to work your shift. But instead of saying that, you asked: “What are you doing here?”
“Come here.” the man deadpanned and opened his arms to hug you. Yoongi felt like family. “How are you?”
“Are you asking for yourself or to tell my brother?” you reluctantly asked, even if you were thankful for his presence.
“Is there a difference?” he chuckled and it made your heart a little happy to know he saw you as family too.
“I'm okay.” you assured him as best as you could, letting him look you over.
“Do you want to come up, hyung?” Jeongguk invited, trying not to make things weird between them.
“If that’s okay with you.” Yoongi nodded, adding the reason why he was here in the first place: “I figured that at least I would give you a chance to explain it.”
That was more than you could hope for, really. That at least one of your older brothers would listen to you. Although you might expect a call from Hoseok in the next couple of days, especially if he talked to Angel about any of this.
Yoongi offered Jeongguk a hand with the takeout and beers while you typed the code that unlocked the front door, holding it open for the two men to pass. As you led them to the elevator and stayed in silence all the way to the seventh floor, you wondered how you could feel so at ease in this space.
As if this was already your building and your apartment too, even if you knew you were only here temporarily.
Jeongguk was the one opening the front door of his home and you both kicked off your shoes at the entrance, allowing Yoongi to do the same and close the door after himself.
“Will you eat with us, Yoon?” you invited, extending an olive branch.
Yoongi nodded, ever the observant guy. You were sure he was studying you and Jeongguk, looking at you both in a new light. You wondered what you looked like from his point of view, moving so seamlessly around each other. As Jeongguk opened the take out bags, you reached for three plates, then as you went into the fridge to pick up three beer cans, he handed you the newest ones to replace them.
You and Jeongguk acted like you were used to existing around each other, because you were. Even if it was the first time that Yoongi was actually seeing it.
“This is a nice place.” Yoongi looked around when you joined him in the small living room, placing the food and drinks on the center table. “How did you get it in a day?”
“It wasn't in a day.” Jeongguk let you take the spot next to Yoongi on the couch and sat on the floor across from the two of you, on the other side of the small table. “Did Jimin hyung really not tell you?”
“Jimin knew? About you?” the older man’s surprise told you that Jimin might have given his boyfriend Guk’s new address, but didn’t tell him anything else.
“He found out in Jeju.” you added, watching Yoongi’s lips part in surprise. “That’s when Angel found out too, and I asked them not to tell anyone, not before we told Joon.”
“So you were planning on telling him.” Yoongi sighed, reaching for a beer can to pop open and take a sip of.
“Of course we were, hyung.” Jeongguk didn’t want to make this into a serious conversation, picking up one of the plastic gloves that came with the takeout and put it on his hand to grab a piece of chicken.
“We were going to tell him yesterday.” you were shaking your head as you thought back to your bad luck. “Jennie beat us by like ten minutes.”
“Fuck.”
That was all Yoongi could say for the time being, certainly thinking through everything he saw that day at the coffee shop, everything Namjoon told him, and what he could see now as Jeongguk opened your beer can for you and you got up to pick up the napkins Guk always forgot behind.
As if deciding he needed carbs for this conversation, Yoongi reached for a chicken wing. Your stomach wasn’t completely settled yet, but if you were going to drink, then you needed to at least eat a little bit.
“Okay, lay it on me.” Yoongi spoke after he decided he was ready to hear you out.
“We always liked each other.” you started, remembering the little speech you had prepared to come out to your sibling. “On a crush level, at least, and you can't tell me you never noticed.”
Yoongi nodded. “We did.”
“We kissed for the first time that night at the Warehouse and we've been together ever since.”
“Really together, hyung.” Jeongguk reiterated, trying to convey how serious he was about you. “We're not just hooking up. I respect dove and I respect Joon hyung. I would never mess with his family if I wasn't confident about this.”
“Why didn’t you tell him before then?”
“There was always something, but we wanted to.” you were the one to reply as Guk was mid bite. “At first we were scared about how oppa would react, you know how he got after Hyejin. And then there was Jeju, and then Soyoon–”
But then something else was changing the track of this conversation: “Does Guk know about Hyejin?”
“I told him everything.” you nodded, looking at Jeongguk to see his round eyes as he knew how important this was to you.
“Damn. So you’re serious serious.” Yoongi was clearly surprised. “You never told anyone about her before.”
“We are.” you picked up your beer for a sip, still holding the one piece of chicken you were slowly chewing into. “And I'm happy. Really happy, which is a first for me.”
“I know.” Yoongi rested his back against the couch, staring at the ceiling for a few seconds. “Fuck, this is messed up. Joon has a whole fucking different picture.”
“I know! We confronted Jennie and she told us what she told him!” you groaned, the whole thing with Guk’s ex was still too fresh and it would easily anger you again. “At least a version of it, I can't fucking trust her.”
“About the drugs?” Yoongi wanted to know, frowning as he said: “Yn he said he saw a picture–”
“The picture is real, I'll admit that. But she made it sound like we do it all the time and that only happened once.” you dropped the half eaten chicken in a corner of the box, cleaning your hands with a napkin. “It was just a happy pill, which you've all done before. It's less harmful than Tae's weed.”
“It still made him freak out.”
“It did. Because it's Namjoon and it’s me and it hit too close to home.” you agreed completely. “But there was no overdose, no close calls. Jennie fucking lied because she is jealous of Jeongguk and can’t seem to get over him.”
“I didn’t think what Namjoon told us was the complete truth either.” Yoongi saw that much was true.
“Thank you for giving us a chance to explain, hyung.” Jeongguk must be feeling a lot more relieved after one of the men he looked up to was listening.
“I owed you both that much.” Yoongi’s smile was tight lipped, but he meant well. Then he turned to you and asked: “If Namjoon asks, can I tell him the truth?”
“If you think he'll listen to you.”
At some point during the night, after the beer cans were empty and the chicken was nothing but meatless bones, Yoongi called Jimin to come pick him up after drinking. As Jeongguk took the hyung downstairs to wait for the ride, you started to clean up the apartment.
You couldn’t say you believed that Namjoon would take Yoongi’s words as gospel truth, but it felt nice to have Yoongi on your side. Hoseok would certainly be swayed a lot more easily than your brother and you already had Jimin and Taehyung’s support.
Things would be okay. You just needed to give time to time.
You reached for your bag where you’d left it on the kitchen counter to check your phone after cleaning up the dinner, noticing you had an unread message.
And then you were back to being figuratively punched in the gut and shivering all over as you read the words on the screen.
Comments
In the famous words of GTA, “Aww shit, here we go again.” Let me guess though, did Jennie give him Doves number. Was he her twins boyfriend? Things seem to be picking up. Joon, the Circle, bitchy delusional ex hookups, now this… ahhhhhhhh!
