JULY 10TH | 08:15

So this is what heaven feels like.

Waking up with Jeongguk’s warm chest pressed against your naked back, tattooed arm serving as your pillow, the other around your waist. His lips peppering light kisses up and down your shoulder, tiny groans of sleep and lazy, slow stretches as he awakened from a deep slumber.

His rough morning voice, catching you on the act:

“Until when are you going to pretend to be asleep?” he asked softly, making a smile appear on your lips, despite your closed eyes.

“Until I’m tired of this.” you mumbled, finally letting yourself stretch, from your legs, your back and your arms.

Jeongguk held you closer, nuzzling into the crook of your neck, a hand resting on your ribs. He had the endearing habit of sniffing your hair and your skin, humming in content every time.

“So, never?” he teaser with a raspy laugh.

“Pretty much, yeah.” you nodded, pulling the covers so you could move around and flip to face him. “Morning, Guk.”

“Morning, dove.”

His eyes were tired and face puffy from sleep, lips a little pursed on a soft pout. You wrapped an arm around his torso and his hand rested on your back; tracing your spine with gentle lines while you wanted his chest to smother you.

You were ready to fall asleep again, sighing in bliss from having been in his arms all night. But the buzzing of something heavy against wood kept coming and it was becoming annoying.

“What is thaaaaat?” you whined, nosing the valley between his pecs. “Make it stop.”

“Hang on.” Jeongguk chuckled and moved his arm backwards to reach his phone on the bedside table. He brought it back and hugged you again, looking at the device from over your shoulder. “We gotta get up.”

Whyyyy?”

“Angel noona texted the group chat, they are already getting ready.” he told you, but didn’t really move to untangle from you. “We don't have to go if you don't want to.”

“No, I do want to go, I'm just lazy.” you yawned, feeling so warm and soft that it was hard to move. “Text her that we'll meet them in twenty minutes.”

“Baby, I can't text her like we're together.” he laughed again and you realized that he was right.

“Well, my phone isn’t here so I can’t say anything.”

“I'll just say ‘let's all meet in twenty minutes’.” he decided, typing it out on his phone from your back.

“Sounds good.”

“Which means we need to get up now, dove.”

“Could you kick me out of your bed any faster?” you huffed, pretending to be annoyed and pushing away from him.

Jeongguk just had to giggle and make all your fake angst melt away with his adorableness.

“I never want you to leave my bed.” he stated, sitting up while you slipped from under the covers. “Will you sleep here again tonight?”

“Are you sure you’re not going to find a groupie in the crowd to bring back?” you teased, but he pulled a disgusted face that made you laugh.

“I already have my favorite fan right here.” his grin was smug and absolutely correct.

“I’m still not flashing you my boobs.”

You walked to the chair in the corner of the room to pick up your dress and underwear from the night before. Jeongguk was up and moving right after you, going into the bathroom to start getting ready.

The connecting door between your rooms was still open from last night and you didn’t bother closing it as you went to your own side to get dressed. Your bed was still made and your makeup bag was still in the middle of it, but you wouldn’t need it right now.

You went to the bathroom to pee, brush your teeth and wash your face, smiling to yourself as you could hear Jeongguk singing along to the song that was playing in his head.

You didn’t know how you would just go back to sleeping in different bedrooms when you went back to Seoul tomorrow. You wanted to hold his hand and to have his arm around you as you walked, and you wanted to let the world see how happy Jeongguk made you.

Not too long now, you thought. As soon as this festival was done –well, not tonight, but soon– you’d tell your brother. You’d tell Namjoon, and your friends, and you’d start fresh. No more sneaking out, no more keeping secrets.

Well. Maybe a few secrets.

At the very top of your suitcase, you had your bathing suit bag waiting for you to pick what you wanted to wear today. You didn’t need to look very far to find the smallest one you packed, the same one you sent a picture of to Jeongguk in the car yesterday.

Nothing would be hanging out and you weren’t about to scandalize any families, but it was a cute two piece. The orange color looked good against your skin, the bottom was tied on each side of your hips with thin strings, the top was a strapless band to avoid any tanning marks just for the sake of your job.

Since Moonbyul and Solar loved to put you in outfits that didn’t cover your shoulders, you didn’t want to make them mad by having a line all the way up both sides.

“What do you think?” you asked out loud as you catwalked back into Jeongguk’s room.

The man dressed in black FILA swim shorts and was trying to decide on each shirt to wear. When he looked your way, he did a double take that satisfied you greatly.

“I think that it’s a good thing your brother isn't coming to the beach with us.” he noted with a nervous laugh.

“He wouldn't make me change–”

“No, but he’d see me drooling over you.” Jeongguk explained what he meant, mouth still parted as he looked at your chest.

You laughed, throwing your head back as you pointed out: “You couldn't even look at me yesterday and I was a lot more covered!”

“And look where that got us, Jimin hyung found out about us.” he argued, picking the black oversized shirt instead of the white one.

“That’s true, but Jimin also knows everything about everyone.” you shrugged, walking back into your room and the next thing you said had Jeongguk following: “He said he knew you had a crush on me.”

You knew I had a crush on you.” he quipped with a snort.

“I hoped that you did.” you corrected.

“I had no idea you had a crush on me.” Jeongguk said as if it was still shocking him to this day.

“I’m still the one who kissed you first.” your shoulders raised as you went back to your suitcase to pick up the sheer cotton, long sleeved coverup to wear over your bikini. “That has to count for something.”

“I doesn't.”

You scoffed, turning around to see Jeongguk tonguing the inside of his cheek. “Oh, really?”

It was Jeongguk’s turn to scoff. You opened your mouth to complain, but then he was launching for you playfully, making you squeal and then cover your mouth. Your eyes were wide as the two of you stayed in complete silence as you waited to check if you could hear anything outside.

“I’m sorry,” you whispered just to be safe. But all Jeongguk did was smile and kiss your lips twice. “You go out first.”

“Okay.” he whispered back, pecking your lips twice more.

You felt like you were on cloud nine, giggling behind your hand as you watched Jeongguk march away from you and close the door between your two rooms, just to be safe. You couldn’t remember the last time you felt so giddy about someone, if ever.

When you finally heard Jeongguk leaving and voices as he ran into someone in the hallway, you rushed to step into your sandals and grab your phone and beach bag you had already packed the day before.

You schooled your face and opened your door, finding Hoseok, Angel and Jeongguk just outside.

“Morning, guys.” you greeted with a small wave and this time it was you who couldn’t look Jeongguk in the face.

“Is everything okay? We heard you scream.” Angel asked you with concerned eyebrows.

“I thought I saw a spider.” was your excuse, as if you could find any bugs in a five star hotel. “False alarm, don’t worry.”

Somewhere nearby another door opened and you expected to see either Jimin and Yoongi or your brother, maybe someone changed their mind and decided to join your beach trip.

The four of you were rendered speechless as you saw a woman walking out of Namjoon’s bedroom, walk of shame style. Soyoon passed between all of you with a tiny ‘good morning’ and ‘excuse me’, to go to the elevator.

“That was–” Hoseok might not have been with you when Namjoon talked to the woman, but he watched her concert and definitely knew who Soyoon was.

“Yep–” you nodded with a mix of pride and disgust.

“But hyung was alone when we came back to the hotel last night–” Jeongguk voiced what you were all thinking.

“What’s going on?” Angel asked, a little slow to catch up.

And then you said: “Guess I’m not the only one who sneaks out in the middle of the night, then.”

JULY 10TH | 09:13

It was nice to see that Lisa and Chaeyoung were together on a Sunday, probably buying makeup like they mentioned the other day. Surprisingly enough, you were excited to see them for your shift tomorrow, wondering if there were any Jeju souvenirs you could bring them.

As you typed a quick reply, you jogged back up from the water to the spot in the sand where your friends were lounging.

Angel was laying on her stomach, sunbathing on top of a beach towel. She had untied the back of her top, which was constantly giving Hoseok a heart attack each time she moved.

Growing up, you didn’t think Seok was the relationship kind of guy at all, so it made sense why it took someone like Angel to knock down his walls and take him off the market.

Hoseok himself was sitting under one of the four beach umbrellas, next to Jeongguk who was also hiding from the sun. The latter had his feet stuck in the sand, but he was still wearing his t-shirt just as you were still in your coverup.

“Is everything okay?” Guk asked as you were within earshot. All he saw was your phone dinging and you walking close to the water to take a picture, not really aware of what was happening.

“Yeah, I was just texting Lisa.” you told him as you sat down on the empty chair between Guk and Seok.

“Oh my god, you have other friends?!” Hoseok gasped dramatically, a hand over his heart.

“She's a coworker.” you told him with a laugh, dropping your phone into the beach bag by the foot of your chair.

“Namjoon-ah mentioned you're working for your parents again, but I didn't believe him.” Seok commented, eyeing you from above his shades.

“Again.” you repeated with an amused laugh. “Coming to the office after school when we were fourteen does not equal working for TK Energy.”

“Still.”

“Wait, hang on,” Angel was ready to join the conversation when she heard something interesting. She raised her body up, showing the side of her boob and making Hoseok complain. “Your parents own TK Energy?!”

“Oh yeah.” you nodded. The name of the company wasn’t something you spread around a lot, for personal and safety reasons.

“Wow.” Angel’s eyes were wide. “We have our own chaebol in the group.”

“The old money kind, too.” Hoseok added, but you knew better than to worry that he cared about that.

“I guess.”

Well. Your parents owned the biggest energy company in South Korea, everyone had at least heard of TK Energy. You were a millionaire from birth, raised on the best of the best and never having to worry about where the next paycheck would come from. While living in the same house as your parents, you never had to cook as every meal was made by a private chef.

You celebrated your fourth birthday at Disney World and your backpack in high school was a Burberry.

The company had been in your family for almost a century at this point, as your father’s father had inherited it from his father. So when Hoseok playfully called you old money, he meant it. For your generation it meant that you preferred small brands to designer, your car was an older and cheaper model, and you most definitely couldn’t stand the socialite life that your mother used to be a big fan of.

While all that money allowed you and Namjoon the best education and opportunities, it also came with a price. The risk of kidnapping and blackmail was very much present all your life, which meant your parents moved mountains to ensure that their children would remain anonymous until it was time to take over the company; when you would be introduced to society as the newest heir.

No one knew who you were, outside of your closest group of friends. And you were more than okay with that.

“Do you worry your parents might find you an arranged marriage?” Angel was still wrapping her mind around your family name and all that it meant.

Jeongguk started to choke as he heard the question, putting down the can of soda he’d been sipping on. You sat up straighter to pat him on the back to make sure he was okay.

“Angel watches too many dramas.” Hoseok apologized for his girlfriend but you didn’t mind it.

“I don’t think they would.” you answered truthfully.

“You don’t think?” Jeongguk was probably expecting a more assertive reply.

“Well, my parents were part of an arranged marriage.” you told him what you knew was news to him. “It was a business proposal to unite my dad’s company with my mother’s family influence.”

“Oh, this is so exciting!” Angel gushed, sitting up on her beach towel.

It was funny how Jeongguk covered his eyes to respect her modesty and Hoseok screeched for her to be careful, even if Angel was already holding her bikini top against her chest. Hoseok stook up to help his girlfriend tie the piece back on and you explained:

“It was a business power move.” you told them, knowing it was the first time Angel and Guk learned about that. “But they never loved each other.”

“So they didn’t realize they had more in common and fell for each other?” Angel sounded hopeful, but you had to break her heart. “No enemies to lovers?”

“More like… Business partners to enemies.”

“Wait, enemies?” the woman was still confused, but you didn’t blame her.

“As far as Korean Society knows, they are a power couple.” you were trying really hard to not let the lump on your throat build up. “But in all ways but legal, they are divorced. They live in separate houses on the same property to keep up the appearances. I haven’t seen either of them in almost five years. They didn’t create a family, they had kids to ensure their lineage.”

And now neither of their children wanted anything to do with it.

“Oh.” Angel’s excitement died and you felt a little bad about bringing the mood down. This was no topic for a morning at the beach.

“You know what I don’t get?” Jeongguk started and you all looked at him to listen. “How could two loveless people ever create someone like you?”

You were stunned into silence, just as the two people around you. Jeongguk didn’t have to elaborate, you knew what he meant. You just wished you could see yourself through his eyes.

“You’re so sweet, Guk.” Angel broke the silence for you, which you were thankful for. And she chucked it off to the man’s sweet nature, instead of the feelings he couldn’t hide from his eyes.

“Okay, I need to get some fluids into this one.” Hoseok announced once his girlfriend’s bikini was tied properly. “You guys want anything from the bar?”

“I’m good, thank you, Seok.” you shook your head, not able to look away from Jeongguk.

“I still have my soda, hyung.”

“We’ll be right back, then.” Hoseok announced and helped Angel stand up.

When it was just you and Guk, you were still staring at him lovingly.

“Want to go cool down in the water?” he asked you, mid stand.

You nodded and got up after him.

Jeongguk took his shirt off and you got rid of your coverup, both pieces of clothing left on the same chair as you walked down the hot beach.

Jeju was one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever been to, the vast, blue ocean, the mountains, the greenery. When your feet reached the water, you took a deep breath, filling your lungs with the salty air, knowing you’d taste it on Jeongguk’s skin later.

“You’re quiet.” he noted with a soft voice. “Was I out of line in what I said?”

“Not at all, baby.” you shook your head and he stepped in front of you to make sure he believed you. “It just scared me to death.”

“I’m sorry–”

“It scared me because it made me realize that losing you would tear me apart.”

“You’re never gonna lose me, dove.” he held your face with both hands, not caring about anyone around you. “I promise you that.”

And you believed him.

But you knew that life had a way of taking people from you.

 JULY 10TH | 16:58

“Oh, god, I’m so nervous it feels like I’m the one going up on that stage.”

You might not have any nails left by the end of the festival.

About an hour ago you separated from the four artists of your group, choosing to leave the backstage area, despite the VIP lanyard around your neck, in order to watch the concerts from the crowd. You were walking between Jimin and Angel, each of you with a beer cup and excitement in your steps.

Yoongi’s (Agust D’s) set would be the last of the three, with Namjoon’s being the first. So on the scale of who was most nervous, you took first place. Not because of your brother, despite being extremely proud of how far he’d come. But because of Jeongguk.

You knew how nervous he was, how his perfectionist brain was running miles an hour to make sure everything went well. Jeongguk was also feeling the pressure, wanting to make your brother proud, so thankful for this opportunity.

Out of all of his jobs, the tattoo shop, the fights… This was his dream. Being on stage, singing his heart out. If he could choose, you knew what he’d pick. And this was his first big shot, the opportunity to open Namjoon’s set with him.

And you were here to see it, to film it and to congratulate him after he was done.

“Please don’t.” Jimin started, and you knew what came next before the words were even out of his mouth. “Your singing is worse than Joon hyung’s.”

“It’s annoying that I can’t say the same about you.” you grumbled, too nervous to create a comeback. Looking at Angel, you asked: “Is it a family thing? Do you sing too?”

“I’m not as good as him.” she told you with a look that told you she was just annoyed at her cousin’s talents as you.

“She does have a feature in one of Hobi hyung’s songs.” Jimin said, while Angel widened her eyes and hushed him.

“Do you have to tell that to everyone?!”

“What’s wrong with him saying it?” you asked with a laugh.

Angel didn’t want to answer you, clearly mortified, but you were too curious to let it go. Then you turned to Jimin, expectantly.

“If you listen to Arson really carefully,” Jimin didn’t let you down. “You can hear her moans in the background.”

“For the love of–” Angel started walking just a little faster, trying to get away from you. You laughed and gasped at the same time, grabbing Jimin’s arm as he nodded happily. You would never listen to Hoseok’s song the same ever again, that was for damn sure. You also couldn’t help but wonder if Jeongguk would ever ask you to do something like that for him, too. And then your thoughts went to him fucking you inside a recording studio and it was time to stop.

“No, but real talk.” Jimin started again once you caught up to his cousin. “It’s amazing that they’re here. It feels like just yesterday they were performing at The Hole.”

“Next stop, Lollapalooza or Coachella.” you decided as your tummy did a little flip. “And we’ll bring everyone along.”

“You better be paying.” Jimin sang happily. “I do miss the others, but I’m glad we don’t have to deal with Minsu and Tae’s drama right now.”

“He’s doing better, I think. So we won’t have to deal with it for long.” you told him, feeling sorry for your heartbroken friend. “Angel, have you talked to Minsu lately?”

“Yeah… Let’s just say the magical start of the relationship is wearing off.” the woman said and you wondered if she missed Tae as much as he missed her.

The three of you finished your drinks during the time it took for you to reach the gated area in front of the stage, where a security guard was checking everyone’s passes to make sure no one got into where they shouldn’t be. You threw all of the plastic cups away before running to meet with your friends.

Jimin took each of you by a hand, weaving through the crowd in search of an empty spot that had a good view of the stage.

From this close everything looked so huge! All of the lights, the big screen at the back of the stage with the camera feed so that even the people further away could see what was happening.

Excitement was running through your veins, blood rushing to your brain so fast you felt a little dizzy. Your heart was beating in the rhythm of the pop song playing while staff ran from one side to the other of the stage to prepare it for the next performer.

Your freaking brother!

You wished your parents could see him now, just out of spite.

“Oh, god, I think this is it–” Jimin gasped once all of the lights went off on stage and the screens went black.

There was a single microphone stand in the middle of the stage and an instrumental track started to play, making the whole crowd, including you, Angel and Jimin start to scream and clap. The lights blinked and flickered in shades of yellow and gold.

“What song is that–” you started when you didn’t recognize it as one of your brother’s. Even the style was completely different from his.

The guitar chords, the drums… It was a lot more pop than Namjoon’s hip hop roots. But then someone walked on stage, in a straight line towards the mic stand; Jeongguk, handsome face amplified by the zoom of the camera filming the whole thing.

He was wearing a tailored vest, sleeveless and tighter to accentuate his tiny waist. The pants matched the vest, with a silver chain on the side of his hip.

“Guk is alone–” Jimin was as baffled as you.

In fact, out of the three of you, Angel was the only one that didn’t look surprised when Jeongguk grabbed the mic and started to sing.

Play me slow

Push up on this funk and give me miracles

(Let ya body know)

Make it known

How we left and right is something we control

(You already know)

Your heart was doing somersaults inside your chest, your hands were covering your mouth from the surprise of seeing him opening Namjoon’s concert on his own. And Jeongguk looked like he belonged on that stage. His whole attitude was completely different from the sweet, boyish man you knew and adored.

It reminded you of the persona he put up when he was in the fighting ring, but instead of getting ready for that kind of spectacle, he was moving his body to the beat of the song, controlling every inch of it, from the movements of his feet, to the tips of his fingers.

You know that, all night long, we rock to this

Screaming, I testify this lovin'

All night long, we flock to this

Screaming, I testify that

We'll survive the test of time

There was so much you wanted to focus on you didn’t even think about getting your phone to film the performance, having to trust that Jimin would do a good job of it. You were certain that you had never heard that song in your life, and you knew all of Jeongguk’s released music by heart.

You couldn’t ignore the lyrics and how they resonated with you. You, in particular. Jeongguk was sending a message, one that made you want to scream, dance, and sing along to.

It reminded you of the promise he’d made you today and so many times before:

They can't deny our love

They can't divide us

We'll survive the test of time

I promise I'll be right here

Standing next to you

Standing in the fire next to you, oh

You know it's deeper than the rain

It's deeper than the pain

When it's deep like DNA

Something they can't take away, ayy

Take-take-take-take-take-take off

“Let’s go!”

Jeongguk announced before walking to the front of the stage and leaving the mic on the floor. The beat picked up and he started to dance; complete with quick turns, footwork and body rolls while grabbing his crotch.

You were jumping and screaming from the top of your lungs, feeling like a groupie seeing her favorite idol live on stage.

“You knew about this?” Jimin yelled at Angel, over all of the other screams from the crowd as Jeongguk thanked everyone and bowed

“Maybeeeee.” she laughed, then admitting: “That’s why you two couldn't come with us yesterday, Guk did a soundcheck.”

“Oh my god!” you were losing your mind.

“He wanted it to be a surprise.” the girl explained. “And I wasn't sure why, but after this morning at the beach I understood.”

That comment had you looking at her with questioning eyes. And then you realized that she knew.

“How long?” Angel asked with an encouraging smile.

“A month.”

She nodded, bringing up what seemed to be everyone’s concern: “Are you scared of Joon?”

“I think he is more scared than me.” you told her, knowing that after today Jeongguk would feel like he owed your brother even more.

“Boys like to act tough with each other, yeah? I know Joon likes to play the intimidating big brother to scare boys away.” Angel didn’t know half of it, but you appreciated it regardless. “But when you were gone, I got to meet a softer side of him. One that really cares about you.”

“I know he does.” there it was, the guilt again.

“I think after the initial surprise dies down, he'll be glad it's Guk.” she said, and you really hoped she was right. Then Angel squeezed your shoulder and said: “If Namjoon asks, I didn't see you  after his set. Go on, we’ll keep him distracted.”

“Really?” your eyes must be sparkling, from the way she nodded and smiled.

“After a song like that, you must go see him.”

You could feel guilty about missing Namjoon’s set later. Jimin promised he would film the whole thing so you could watch it, too. But you just couldn’t stay in the crowd, not after what Jeongguk did. Not after his surprise, the song that you knew in your heart had been written with you in mind.

And then you were off and running from the direction in which you came, passing by dancing people, groups of friends and couples. There was so much you wanted to say to Jeongguk once you saw him, so many praises! And you had so many questions, too.

Like when did he write that song? What was it called? Did he choreograph it himself? How did he have time to rehearse it?

Once you returned backstage, almost bumping into a sound tech who nagged you for running, you stopped to look around and search for Jeongguk.

Unless he decided to stay in the sidelines to watch Namjoon’s performance from that close, he’d have to be around here somewhere–

“Dove!”

You turned around at the call, finding him. Just as he found you.

And then you were running again.

Towards Jeongguk, who started to jog in your direction, too. Uncaring of who was watching, needing to be closer to each other.

When you were near enough to reach, you jumped with arms around his neck and Jeongguk caught you with strong arms around your waist. With the momentum of when your bodies collided, he spun around until he found his balance again. Your feet returned to the floor and you wobbled, laughing like you were in a silly rom-com, reunited with your lover after you defeated the antagonist.

You were throwing your head back with giggles and he joined you, both pumping with the adrenaline of what just happened.

“Did you like–”

You interrupted him by holding him by the back of his neck and smacking a fat kiss on his lips. Then you mumbled: “You were fucking incredible.”

“I saw you in the crowd.” he grinned with an eyebrow lifted.

“Yeah?” you marveld, wondering if he really had. “Then you know I was this close to lifting my shirt.”
