Hello free members/call for Q&A questions!

Hey everyone!

As the title suggests, I wanted to say hello to all those people who have signed up as free members. Patreon introduced this as a feature a few months back and honestly I've never really known what to do with it, despite a fairly steady stream of people registering their interest.

I guess the free tier is just for people wanting updates or something? Either way, while my focus on here is definitely providing bang for people's buck in the form of a bunch of exclusive videos (that you can access for as little as a dollar a month!), I really want to emphasise how cool it is that you followed me over here in the first place.

The Patreon really is the reason I'm still able to do what I do—if I was solely relying on ad payments, the amount of work I put into this stuff would not be sustainable. Just the fact you're showing interest in following me on this platform is not something I take lightly—thank you all so much.

So I've been thinking about what I could do to make this Patreon more of a platform in and of itself. While the full exclusive vids will continue as they have done—available to those who pledge any amount—I thought maybe doing a Q&A vid every so often for all members, paid or free, might be kinda cool.

If that's something you're interested in, if there are things you're curious about regarding my thoughts on games, video making process, life stuff, etc., leave your questions in the form of comments down below and I'll see about making a video answering what I can.

Hope you're all good! More videos coming very soon!

Thanks again,

Hamish

Writing on Games

I loved the armored core videos you did, they were my introduction to your channel and combined with the AC6 trailer got me into armored core, which is now one of my favorite game franchises! My question is, when are you gonna find and cover another series this good?! And how did you manage handling all those AC games for that original video? Both logistically and mentally!

Any chance the pod is coming back at some point?

Second question: Do you frequently listen to game soundtracks? I love to listen to relaxing and nostalgic game ambience while working. A lot of Guild Wars and Elder Scrolls in my case.

Here’s a stupid question, as someone who feels like there’s hardly enough time to play games - as someone who reviews and writes on games, how many hours do you play in an average week?

What has been your most memorable musical moment in video games, be it a particular track, setpiece, level, soundtrack, or entire game?

Nicholas Villeneuve

Hey! I'm a developer myself and have been following the channel since I started studying, basically. Love your work! I've been wanting to play/try out more games and also in a more thorough/immersed way, both as a player and as an analyzing designer, but I rarely end up doing so because of the following reasons: - I end up replaying the same multiplayer or extremely replayable games a lot of the time. For the record, I enjoy this, going deep into one game or playing a multiplayer game with friends and following its e-sport. - It can feel like a chore because there are too many games I want to play and it takes time to get into them or because it's been on my mind for a long time already (and I might have owned the game for a long time as well) - Playing video games is time consuming and doesn't feel productive. Though with a lot of games I do really think it's time well spent. In particular when I succeed at immersing myself and really going for it. I'm sure as a content creator in this field, you've got a backlog to get through and it can feel like a chore. Do you have any advice here? Like do you allocate time to play certain games? Do you find the experience more valuable if you take your time with a game or take notes or provide a better context for playing them?

I have a couple questions! What's a video game moment from your childhood that really stood out? Do you think triple-A developers develop a level of insecurity regarding the form of entertainment they work in as they grow larger? I've been getting a sense that some of the "auteurs" feel a bit embarrassed and would rather be making films instead of video games but weren't well connected enough in their earlier days to get into that industry.

As someone who dissects video games for a living, how difficult is it to understand that a game is very well constructed and made by passionate people, but doesn’t click with you personally? Is it a challenge trying to convey that feeling to an audience that will most likely disagree?

Hello Hamish, thank you for your amazing and insightful content that has made me pick up games I would never have thought of otherwise, and reexamine both my own outlook on the games industry and various games themselves. My question to you is: Who would win in a fight a billion lions or every Pokémon? /j Actual question: What are some trends in the game industry that are giving you hope for the future of the industry as a whole?
