FIRST GROTTO - Collab with Rolf Nowotny

hello, little birds ♥

here's something special and unique for you: recently I was contacted by installation artist Rolf Nowotny (a little bird, as it happens!), who asked me to collaborate on an installation that he would come to call FIRST GROTTO, an examination of homes and their sometimes pernicious parasitism.  I was and still am elated to have been part of this project, it is ABSOLUTELY my jam, and installation art is something I've always wished I could engage with more.

everything you see in this video is the work of Rolf and his team.  my contributions were the music that can be heard playing in the background, and a piece of supplementary flash fiction that was included as part of a guide/playbill/handout for those who toured the installation.  Rolf has graciously and enthusiastically allowed me to release my contributions for this piece as rewards for my patrons, so you can find them included as an attachment to this post.  Please be sure to show Rolf some love in the comments to this post, he was an absolute delight to work with and this collaboration was a huge boost at a time when I've been feeling particularly disabled and creatively inadequate.  links to his website and instagram can be found in the additional information of the video itself.

as a brief update to other things, the discord is still happening soon (I had to recover from the debacle of the first attempt), and streams and live Q&As will swiftly follow.  I'm also within a few days of finishing a small PHANTOM_HOUSE, the first in too long, so please stay tuned for that.  i hope you've all been well, little birds.  what a vicious year it's been.  please keep taking care of yourselves.  i love you

Very exciting! Your particular styles and contributions meshed extremely well. I watched the video on its own first, to absorb the details, then played it again while reading along with the PDF; the somber, resigned atmosphere from the music had such an achingly stark contrast with the mundanely grotesque visuals of the installation and the calm conviction of the narration. This was a real treat that gave such a unique perspective on our relationships with homes, the parts of them we're so eager to ignore partially because of that resignation. For as grim as it can seem, this was an absolute delight. I'm so glad you both could share this with us! It feels especially poignant in a time where so many of us have been trapped in our homes and forced to reckon with these complicated emotions. Wonderful work, both of you~

This is so exciting! The music added so many layers to an already outstanding exhibition. I've recently been exploring media that focuses on the concept of a home being alive and in some cases parasitic, so this exhibition comes at the perfect time for me personally. Its so fun juxtaposing the themes here with what I've already been thinking about from other pieces. I'm so excited to see what else you do in the future <3
