Once upon a time, there was a single light the people looked to amid a sea of darkness. As the eons withered away at it this single light, it flickered and dimmed till it was but a shadow of its once brilliant glory. This light eventually could stand no longer to have what it gave to this realm be taken away. It's eyes opened as it took the form of a man, and confronted the Darkness that had so greedily chewed away at the light he gave off. As it stared into the eyes of the shadows across from him, the Light was shocked to see the Darkness try to copy him. Standing there were three figures. Warped and twisted by the void; they watched him with intrigue, demanding that he continue to illuminate till the last second.
In frustration, the Light summoned all his power to birth new stars, burning the darkness and forcing them to reel back in terror and pain. This pain fascinated the three, for so long they had known nothing but the comfort of silence and a serene nothingness. They became enamored, but also fearful. Pain meant they too could be destroyed by the Light that stood before them.
"Why waste time harming each other?" The three figures spoke together.
"Because you aim to take what I give for granted. My creation will perish without my light, you take what I have given them!" The Light said.
"Only because we have never seen such majesty before. Surely we can exist together?" The three said with the tongues of snakes and the eyes of predators.
"What do you mean," The Light asked before summoning yet another star high above to show him the three clearly.
They reeled back in pain but stood strong, filled with euphoria at the feelings that washed over them. "Let us not waste time destroying one another. Let us instead enjoy all of this together."
"All of what? All you do is feed and destroy!" The Light shouted back at them
"But only because we did not know that we could create. So let us create. You breathe life, we breathe death. You give warmth, we give cold. You offer joy... We offer it meaning in its absence. Why fight, when we can simply feed... We can live. Together."
The shadows slowly wrapped tendrils around the first sun it could, swallowing it whole and causing the three to light up in starlight. Before the Light stood a man, greedy with a smile stretched from ear to ear and no eyes. For he listened to the sweetness of tragedy, allowing it to feed him. The next was a woman. Her skin pale and coal like with a look of anguish and loss in her eyes. The loss of love, the heartache of feelings not shared, the absence of meaning in life. It gave her power, fed her dearly. The final was a woman of small stature, with pale white hair. Her body covered in scarring of all kind, yet her face was twisted in joy. Her body was a patchwork of parts taken from so many. Pain gave way to happiness. The wounds of combat, the agony of a broken heart, it infused her with meaning, and so she stared at the people basking in the warmth of the Light with hunger. For their pain was her prize.
"How dare you even suggest such a thing." The Light scoffed.
"Scared that harmony is too great a challenge?" The Darkness chuckled.
"If you wish to live in harmony then I have but one rule."
"What is this rule, Light?"
"You will be not my equal, for you pervert what I create."
"Not a chance!" The Darkness shouted, ringing with a trillion voices echoed through these three. "We are not your inferiors!"
"Hmph. I will not destroy myself in my goal to vanquish you, but instead will make you a deal then." The Light said as he stood strong against the beast that puppeteer his creations will pale copies.
"A deal? We like deals."
"You may not kill me, and I may not kill you, but instead those that walk across this universe and all others shall be given free will. The power of fate shall be in their hands. When that which binds them is proven. When that which is touched by my light challenges you, when they without even soul stands against you in triumph, and when they which fears not the dust they return to strikes the blow... Then I will have the right to seal you away as you once were. Without form, and only as a tool to give meaning to my creation."
The Darkness laughed at the game presented to it. "Why not, what else is there to do for eternity? But in return if they shall rise against you... Then We shall seal you away. Their pain, their tragedy, their fear will be ours to feed upon. When they see the folly in creation and become enamored with nothing but passing pleasantries then we shall win. When every last star is but food and all the people wish naught but for escape... We shall seal you away and feed forevermore."
The Light and The Darkness dared not touch hands to shake, but both understood the eons that awaited ahead of them. The Darkness retreated back to the blackest pit it could find away from the stars. The Light created more, giving way to worlds here and beyond. Hoping that one day the crucible of life would create a hero worthy of such a game. Or perhaps, many such heroes. For The Light had seen what the Darkness has not. The Light was the last of his kind, and alone he truly could never stand against the shadows. It was in the hands of mortals. Their newfound freewill would grant them the chance needed to spare them from the horrors that hungered away from the Light.
For while The Darkness loomed above, it's unwanted offspring hunted ravenously to drive the world mad. Creatures of vile evil and profane abomination stalked through the Abyssal caverns that stretched around the world, and continue to grow to this day. Heroes are needed now more than ever. For these creatures do not even realize they spread their own death in expansion, and maybe never will
Perhaps one day, you will be one of those heroes.
