Delayed Input 902 Post-Show Assessment

This was a weird episode. It's fun to include these alternate intros, since they're often something I don't script and just kind of work out until I find one I think is funny. The one above genuinely makes me laugh but I wondered if it would start the show off on a very weird foot, so I went with something slightly more broad.

The screenshot disappearing was a fun curveball this week--Wednesday night I'm pretty sure it's a screenshot analysis video, and then Thursday it's gone. In the end it was actually a nice thing since WB claiming the image pretty much confirmed it's real and that they don't want us peeping at it. And also kind of easy humor in just a sloppily traced-over drawing of the actual thing. (I say sloppily but I really spent like an hour doing that. There was a strange moment where I grew to appreciate some of the costume design as I traced over it all in thick black lines. Harley's shirt says "Harley the Queen" which is just so weird)

I didn't even write out the bonus bit as I was scripting. I figured, "I'm doing this whole drawing, I'll just make these characters riff." I think that I probably should have come in with more material, as halfway through you can tell I'm judging my own dumb bit when Waller comes in to explain it's just a soft YouTube skit. But then watching someone come to realize his bit is stupid and quickly move on is also fun, so I think it succeeds in the end.

Also kind of interesting tidbit is that this was age-gated 18+ for mature content when I first uploaded it, with the words "Suicide Squad" being the first two words of the video's title. I was able to appeal the flag and they acted fairly quickly on it, but I wonder if this video game's title is actively going to work against its exposure.

QUESTIONS FROM YOU!

When’s the pink hair coming?
You can't rush pink hair.

If you were guaranteed the same number of views no matter what you made, would that change your output? Would you talk less about news and popular games and more about games you personally like?
I'm not really factoring viewership into the way I make this show. The example above--where I cut the concept of pranking a father's girlfriend into marrying a very sick uncle for being too weird--I'm not thinking "this will hurt views" but "this would make a new viewer so confused." A lot of the decisions are about What would make the most sense to the audience/What would the audience like to see, but not What keeps me at 20k views. So yeah I like talking about news and popular games more than games I personally like. It's actually super hard to say nice things about stuff you love.

Do you have Australian in your blood?  Or have you spent considerable time there in the past?  The accent is simply too good to be a fluke.
--THE VERY NEXT COMMENT--
Also: That's a New Zealand accent... and a damn fine one.

I'm comfy in this place where some people think it's a good accent and others think it's wildly inaccurate. Gru's girlfriend gives a good lesson on finding the Australian accent in Despicable Me 2, that's most of my education. Probably zero of the Captain Boomerang lines were first takes. Lots of "Lookit moy gehn? Looket. Lookit. Lookat. Lookut?"

Have you seen Seth Myers' "Corrections" videos on Youtube?  He writes them all himself, and they are brilliant, hilarious, contain lore and in-jokes, and are clearly a ripoff of your hard work over the years.
I have not, but I think late night shows developing lore is actually a great idea. I really dropped a lot of Delayed Input lore, we gotta pick it up again.

Would it be fair at all to frame this game as a reaction to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (a single-player superhero team game with no battle pass and GAAS features) underperforming?
This might be crazy but I think this Suicide Squad game was probably conceptualized before they really even started on Guardians of the Galaxy. I just think Destiny inspired (and emboldened?) a lot of AAA game creators.

And that's it for today. Next week we have another big live event with an Xbox/Bethesda showcase, though it's going to be maybe a little uncomfortable considering the layoffs they announced last week. I'm probably going to have to mention it if they don't, which is tough because I was thinking next week was going to be the one where I finally get a good joke into Delayed Input.

Comments

I actually kind of like it hopping into a long-running world with a bunch of established designs and lore and rules. Rise was my first Monster Hunter, Yakuza 7 was my first Yakuza. So for sure you hop in feeling behind and overwhelmed but I think there's something nice about how dense it can all feel

Kyle Bosman

Hey Kyle, not sure if this is the best place to ask but : what are your thoughts on games that due to years of franchise experience, have enormous entry barriers ? I will not touch the topic of soul games but for example, Monster Hunter. If you have never played one, how do you even start? It’s layer upon layer of mechanics and sub-systems and combinations, making it extremely non user friendly.

I liked the bonus bit, it's a good point that making everyone shoot guns in your game makes the gun guy a lot less interesting.
