Cars Game Review Assessment

This was a weird video. The clip above is funny in that it was a necessary thread to keep my train of thought connected, but such a fluffy, insignificant complaint that I had to cut it for time. In the final edit I just cut straight to talking about the box for no reason, but I think that's better than 50 seconds of whining about slimy fries.

In the bonus bit I basically admit that this video was developed in the process of scrapping a Mario movie video. I went through a few phases on how to talk about a Mario movie, like there was even going to be a spoken poem at one point, and it really regressed into thinking about what it's like to make personality-based videos at all. In the end I felt two ways: I think having a Mario movie reaction is extremely silly and I also don't want to be out here mocking people who post Mario movie reactions. So my McDonald's mishap was a gift really.

This video itself was something I've been wanting to play around with, which is that it's unscripted and conversational and it can go anywhere. It's podcasty. I should say it's only kind of unscripted, because I definitely thought out how to frame everything and phrase everything a few times ahead of time in my regular "stewing phase."
I don't know if having no script or run-through shows in the final product. Probably the biggest difference you'd notice is that I make myself laugh a few times (and there were a couple more I cut out) which I actually think is kind of nice. Overall it's not a groundbreaking video I can truly be proud of, but I'm happy to be able to post this instead of the alternative, an existential self-destruction brought on by Chris Pratt Mario.

QUESTIONS FROM YOU!

Do you ever feel like it’s less weird for you to play weirdo stuff if it’s for the channel or Twitch? Or is the weirdo edge the whole point?
Yeah, it's justified weirdness if the camera is on. I definitely would have just thrown both toys away in alternate timeline where I wasn't making a YouTube video that night. It's like having a reason to be interesting makes you decide to make weird decisions.
I took a storytelling class a few years ago, and one week's assignment was just to do stupid stuff we wouldn't normally do, and everyone came back the next week with fun stories to tell. So it's weird, it's like I'm presenting a version of myself who wouldn't exist without the audience, but the audience is a fact and so it's like the version of myself who is unaware of the audience becomes inauthentic? We're veering close to the poem I had to delete.

It seems like the consensus on your feedback post was that the audience prefers more production in these videos. I'm curious how you feel about this. Does it disappoint you? Or are you just grateful for the clarity?
I'm not disappointed at all, I liked that feedback. I think the last Delayed Input season was a hard pendulum swing in the laid-back direction, and a lot of that stuff will stick around and a lot will change.

Your ceiling fan looks like EMMI.
No it doesn't!

Do you wish, like I do, that services like Uber Eats and Doordash would all simultaneously crash and burn so we could go back to paying reasonable prices for grease delivery?
They're bad for everyone involved. I need to just delete the app.

And that's it for today! Delayed Input will be back October 21st. I've been shopping for new backdrops but the stressful thing is fearing that none of them will look like how you imagine. I also found a guy who is selling a good joke on Ebay. Top bid right now is $211 USD so I figure it must be pretty funny, might try to get this one.

Comments

I did like the semi-off-the-cuff format. It works when you're passionate about what you're talking about. and junk food/crass marketing/exploiting nostalgia definitely fits the bill. In an ideal world, though, I'd like to see a video like this focused on something positive.

TurboChickenMan

I really liked the parts where you made yourself laugh. I laughed too. I think your videos are always entertaining, whether you are more laid back or use more production and bits. You have an interesting point of view, and however you choose to convey it is fun to watch.
