Delayed Input 604 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2022-06-12 19:54:14 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. Compared to the State of Play episode from last week, this turned out to be notably harder and more time consuming to produce. First it's the search for the common theme, the short story, but then also 2 hours of footage to comb through for the edit. Of the 6 key phrases I had 3 written down in my notes, so the theme surfaced kinda naturally.
I also spent like a half hour trying to make a bonus bit work that I just ended up cutting out in the final edit. It was basically about The Last of Us Remake being the grand finale. I was trying to tie it into this memory from an internship where we had to treat Sheryl Crow with this seemingly disproportionately high level of respect, in comparison to other guests, because of her achievements I guess? It was a loosey goosey bit and failed to come to a strong conclusion and also had no funny moments. That's a recipe for an easy cut, so I was lucky I had so many outtakes from the Punwabia bit to fall back on.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the ep. I really tried to not get negative about things that didn't need negativity while still getting my criticisms out. And another thing I'm trying to get better with is continuing to write these scripts for video, and I think the little payoff of hearing me read the phrase, then seeing it appear in the following clip is kinda fun.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
Is Poonwabbia off the cuff?
Well, no. Here's what the script says:
"Welcome to the world of Punwabbia. Our hero Jaji Xas is the last of the Nicklexa Driles in the age of Narax."
So you're watching me struggle in realtime to remember these made up words. Never once did I get this right.
I beat Godrick the Grafted without getting hit. Are you proud of me?
Yes! Good dodging.
Ever thought about getting more involved in games marketing/PR somehow?
I don't have the social skills you need for those kinds of positions. Also I think I'd always prefer to be making the games, so it would be like coming into work being jealous of my coworkers every day.
Is "another space game" actually a huge trend that's come out of nowhere or just seems like it from the games shown at the main show? And was your space shirt theme an intentional tie-in to the future of games?
So part of the gap between the showcase and writing my episode is looking at the general response out there, and I definitely saw the Grimy Space Horror Fatigue. It didn't seem worth remarking on. I think it's a real trend though, our cultural pendulum is swinging that way for some reason. The space shirts are just, once again, another example of me being on the bleeding edge of fashion and societal trends.
I know you've worked with Geoff on some of his shows, so i was curious: how much does Geoff curate the trailers (or the people that come up to talk about them)? Does he see everything beforehand and provide feedback, or is he more hands off? In your opinion, SHOULD he be giving feedback on trailers, particularly since he seems to be really aware of what fans are looking for?
Usually by the time I'm brought in for Game Awards/Gamescom the premieres are pretty much already set, so I'm never really exposed to that part of the process. I think he's talked about it before though that some studios will keep him posted throughout the phases or a trailer/game demo coming together. And yeah if Keighley was giving me pointers, I would definitely take his notes.
How would you describe Delayed Input energy?
Video game love persevering through depression
And that's it for today. So I'm actually writing this post after watching the Xbox conference. I have bubbles of ideas for next week's episode; not sure they'll still be interesting takes in five days. Kinda really hoping Nintendo squeaks something in this week too. While I can analyze the heck out of those Xbox trailers (and raw gameplay) there just wasn't any material for a good joke.
