Delayed Input 603 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2022-06-05 19:22:55 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. Zippy turnaround on this one--the State of Play started at 6pm my time so it was pretty much just going to be a dash straight from watching the thing through the final upload. Honestly I kinda like the rush, at least as something that pops up occasionally.
I like to take notes during a showcase like this, but that page is really just a list of titles and release dates. I'll take a moment after the show to see how everything was received, and see if new details pop up. Something like "press triangle for hadoken" wasn't in the trailer itself, so yeah it's nice to have a moment to collect info & vibes.
(By the way I never mentioned this--I think it's cool Street Fighter is coming back to Xbox, but it's so weird it's on PS4 and not on Xbox One. I think this is the first time I've seen that, but I didn't really have a good take on it. "Look out Xbox One, you're about to get dumpstered in a year"? I don't know)
Well actually yeah, that long parenthetical is the next part of the process--flipping the laptop open and just writing sentences down. That's usually where the framing device pops up, and this week it became apparent the Short Story of the state of play was just these three huge games. So I cut out a lot of stuff (a lot of which transformed into the Basic Takes) and decided to make it about the 3 Biggest Trailers (even though in Street Fighter 6's case I really wasn't strictly talking about that trailer.)
One funny thing combing through the comments--a lot of people really liked that Final Fantasy trailer, which I truly consider to be Not Very Good. I wonder if I should really dig into this kind of trailer critique (which was really Brandon Jones's thing) and explain in more than a few hot takes why I think it fails. But also I think a lot of people don't separate "cool-looking game, hype announcement" from "poorly-constructed trailer" and misinterpret my perspective, and that's on me to make that distinction clearer.
Also you know I know we all know this stuff doesn't matter, but I'll say it was a little reassuring our YouTube views were back up this week. I think in the back of my mind I fear the algorithm deciding the show is unworthy and burying it for good. It's nice to know all we need to bring people back is for PlayStation to put on a little show with a bunch of huge AAA 90s franchises.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
Can we get a Spotify upload for the "Two Naked Backs" song, please?
Sometimes I make songs I actually like and not even those get to be on Spotify.
Not one pokemon mention?
Honestly Pokemon kind of breezed through my mind this week; I don't think anything they announced was newsy or demanded attention. All that said I have a great deal of respect for Lechonk.
What moments got you giddy? For me it was when you crash upwards through the glass in Rollerdrome. I went "Ho!" And I never go "Ho!"
First the city reveal in Street Fighter 6, then that first shot of the boss flying at the player in the Final Fantasy XVI trailer. So you know, basic stuff.
Why isn’t anyone trying to buy EA? Whose hands would you prefer it end up in?
I legitimately think running a large publisher is incredibly difficult. You've got thousands of expensive employees and the tech is constantly changing and budgets keep increasing; it seems like a sweaty investment. I actually hope they can't find a buyer. I hope the biz chills out for a second.
Are excited to make your own Street Fighter character?
Under most circumstances, no. Like in Tekken I don't like to dress my characters up at all. But I think what they're setting up here with an upstart fighter trying to rise the ranks in the Street Fighter world, it makes a lot of sense. My guy has to put in the work before he's earned the right to stand next to E. Honda.
Are you writing any zingers for Summer Game Fest?
No, but also I get the impression SGF isn't a zinger type of show.
What is the story behind the spaceshirt/overalls theme… is this a thing outside of DI?
Not a thing, I just think it's a funny, highly particular juxtaposition.
What size (space) shirt are you wearing?
I accidentally ordered two of them in XXL.
What announcements are you looking forward to the most?
Shredder's Revenge release date, a long Starfield demo, and maybe a Nintendo Direct with something weird in it.
And that's it for today. This upcoming week's big show, the titular Summer Game Fest (Summer Game Fest the event has a single show called Summer Game Fest) starts at 2pm my time. I expect the turnaround to be similar to last week's, though it is a much longer show. Honestly it's the edits still that really slow me down. But also it's what's kind of nice about the format. I like saying "look at this" knowing full well Kyle the Editor will have to show whatever This is. Once I have mastered the art of editing I hope to focus some of my energies on integrating humor into Delayed Input.
Comments
I fail to see how a desk would give me more views, and I doubt Kyle just wants to do the greatest hits of the FB days. He also probably doesn't have the space for it since shot FB in a office space and DI is shot in a bedroom.

2022-06-06 14:06:39 +0000 UTCI noticed you wrote a bit about that the views had gone up again, so I have a suggestion. I think "E3" would be the perfect time to update your background. You don't need to change it completely, but I would love to see you back behind a desk like in the Final Bosman days. I think it would really help with making the thumbnails look a bit more interesting. "E3" is also the perfect time to do this, as you probably have the most eyes on you right now.
2022-06-06 11:08:29 +0000 UTCmy love for FF must be fading. i have not seen the new trailer, and yet I still don't care to look it up
